Hi all, looking at new tub and wondering what motor to choose. I know both are brand new motors with little info on them.Looking at Triton 186 FH which has max HP of 150.I don,t know what top speed is and if i can save a few bucks with E-tec i might go that route! The Merc sounds like it,s solid but wondering on the E-tec if i can save a dime or so and not get hurt on speed. Any logical responses would be appreciated. The cost is similar with the Skeeter MX 1825 but i like the Triton layout better. Thanks all!

I have run the Merc 150 4 stroke. Nice motor. Hard to say on the price, haven't seen the E Tech pricing on the 135HO yet.

For what it is worth, I know a lot of folks who work at Mercury, including a couple of engineers and they really speak highly of that new 150. They think it will be very durable, fuel efficient and relatively light for a four stroke. The engineers in particular tend to be somewhat reluctant to praise up a motor, being perfectionists but they like this one. It is not an engineering marvel like the Verado, but a good, solid, practical engine according to them.

Both motors are cutting edge. Probably will be more than satisfied with either. I still maintain the DI 2S will outperform a NA 4S. Have you checked out the 135 or 150 Opti's?

I had a Tuffy 1760 with the new 150 Fourstroke all fall and there is only one word I can say about it, awesome! The motor had great holeshot with a full load, tremendous torque, quiet and was just as fast as the 150 Optimax I had on a previous 1760.

I highly suggest it, at least wait to get an opportunity to try one on the water if your unsure, I don't think you'll be disappointed. It's an awesome motor all the way around!

Is there a reason the Yamaha F150 hasn't been mentioned??

I repowered my 2005 Ranger 618VS with the 150 Yami, and it's great!!

She does 56mph with a full load of fuel and gear..

Yes there is. It wasn't part of the original question.

Well, I'm just saying I've heard to many bad things about the Etec and people having to replace the head unit. There's a reason they're less expensive than all the other motors. You wanna play you're gonna have to pay. I've had Merc and they're customer service is great, but since I've owned the Yammi I can't say I'd ever consider anything else. You get what you pay for, so i figure you might aswell pay a little more for the peace of mind.

AJ! The motor in question is the brand new 135 HO E-Tec that has,nt be reviewed yet. It,s been tested for several years now like the new Merc 150-4 stroke. The problem is the max HP for the boat is 150HP.Insurance wise 135 hp + 8 hp kicker is 143 total HP vs 158 Hp which is over boat limit with the Merc. I'm trying to get the biggest motor on the boat and my kicker and stay under the Insurance limit of 150 total horses and the 135 HO E-Tec seems to fit the bill perfectly.Does anyone know the price of one?
Thanks All!

Your kicker motor shouldn't factor into the max hp of the boat. If your insurance company is trying to tell you that it does, then that is one goofy ins. company.

I just put a the new Merc 150 on my boat, unfortunately not a lot of time on it since it is hard water. Everyone I have talked to said it is going to be a good one, and that it is one hot motor. The general consensus seems to be that while the sticker says 150, it is putting out well over that.

When I looked at the yammy it was about a $3000 upcharge over the Merc. Not saying anything bad as the Yammy 150 is the gold standard of 150's, but there is a significant price difference between the two.

I would agree, I strongly considered the 150 merc opti, but the dealer was gonna charge me an arm and a leg for the new controls. So since my previous motor was a Yammi 115, I opted to stay with them.

Thanks for the info guys!My set up is at just under 40 K now with 150 HP 4 stroke merc. No Opti here. Definitely E-Tec over Opti for me.The New E-Tec has 3 + 3 = 6 years of full warranty. Merc 4 stroke has 3 year full ! Dealer said I get an additional 2 years for a total of 5 on Merc!

I was the one who mentioned to him about checking locally on how they determine the max HP power rating. The coast guard rules/laws says that the total power not exceed the max rating and some insurance agencies go strictly by the coast guard. So I said to make sure he can get insured and that this would not affect any warranty if issues arise with the transom/boat. It seems each state has its own little spin on this rating (not saying right or wrong) but would put a damper on a new purchase quickly if something arised and they dig up the fine print.

BTW, my vote was for the 150!
