Hi Everyone

I would like to paint my FIRST muskie lure. I got the jerk bait blanks from the muskie shop. I want to use my airbrush.

What type of primer, paint and clear coat should I use?

Where is a good place to purchase the materials.

Thanks.

Mike

I use createx water based paint which you can find at hobby lobby. Prime the lure with opaque white and your ready to paint. For clear I use etex lite which you can find at menards. If you use this you will need a drying rack that spins using a roticery motor. This will make sure your clear coat won't sag. Mix equal parts hardner and clear using a siringe to measure. Mix it well for 3 to 5 minutes and let it sit undisturbed for 5 minutes. This gives the bubbles a chance to rise to the surface. When you see the bubbles simply blow on them and they will come right out. Then just brush on a thin coat and let the lures spin untill the epoxy has hardend. You can apply another coat about 12 hours from your first coat. Hope that helps.

What Zack said!! I would like to add that the wicked line from createx is very nice. That is the paint that I use. There are plenty of good paints out there if you want to play and spend a little more money but I feel that the wicked paints will do most everything you need to do and are easy to find at any hobby lobby or store like it

I use all lacquer paint, Can be gotten at almost any auto parts store. I You need a good spray booth and wear a mask but for the volume of baits that I paint It is the only way to go cause I spray wet over wet. For slower work on just very few baits, Do what the fellows are saying. Less hazardess.

Yup, what Zach and Matt said.  While you’re at the hobby store buy some mesh material to spray through to get the scale effects.  They will also have stencil material there for helping with other effects.  Where I’m from they have Hobby Lobby stores, most everything you’ll need can be found there.
