Was wondering if anyone has any topwater baits that are not normally thought of as a topwater bait or sold as a topwater.

For instance we use a Bobbie Bait with the tail bent straight down and when jerked from the surface it produces a fantastic splash and dive that has produced a lot of muskies for a friend of mine.It looks just like a dying fish trying to dive again.

I also use a Squirlley Burt reeled slowly on the surface with an occassional jerk to make the bait dive that works great on dead calm evenings, sort of like a flaptail bait.

Would like to hear about some other ideas you guys have come up with.

The Undertaker, twitched lightly, will stay up on top if you want it to, and works really well. Last trip to the Goon, this was our 'seeafish bait'. Caught one on it, Jason did, too!

I just took an Odyssey Pigtail crankbait, removed the lip and replaced it with the metal blade from a giant jitterbug. It works, and looks, great. You can reel it slow for a subtle approach or speed it up for a little more commotion. It also has a nice rattle or clacking sound to it. The tail is replaceable and I plan to try a bucktail, and maybe even a skirt on a few. Can't say I've nailed any big boys on it yet, but the time is coming as I plan to use it often. Gotta give them something different to look at once in awhile.

HODAG,

I use a 10" Jake cranked real slow, what a wobble! Also try Believers, they can be cranked reel slow on the surface with some great action. Both are high profile baits.

Jointed believers are as good as a hawg wobbler reeled slow on the surface.

Rapalas big shad rap can be reeled slow and the tail will drag the surface for a subtle approach and a mann's -1 works good on the surface too.

I got great action on 7" suicks with the tail bent slightly upwards. Just short sweeps of the rod with a pause after every sweep. Try it!

I like to bend the lip down on a Hi-Fin Giant Scamper and reel it slow on the surface, she really clacks!

I agree with Jason Schillinger, The old Hi Finn jointed Scampers (large ones) with the front lip bent straight down make a great Hawg wobbler when reeled slow.

I like popping the top wuith a Slammer crankbait, using it the way I used to work the old balsa and plastic stip Rapalas.

Jason and I tried that shallow on the docks yesterday for awhile, and I really fell in love with the new Slammers he had...but ''monkey puke''?

I was shocked that it has worked out on Pewaukee.

Todd, if you cut the bottom piece of the lip of a rapala supershadrap, it will go only 40cm deep on a cast. Try slowing down the retrieve. It will make a bigger wake than with the entire lip. Got a few follows on this modified one but no takes yet. Will surely come soon! Good luck!
