I had a trip planned with Jason for next tuesday but I had to cancel on it this morning. He filled the spot in 30 seconds...Congrats again to Roger Jason and Jodi, that fish is incredible!

Left fins were clipped in 1993 & 2004, most likely 19 years old.

Yes, I think Jody probably is a good luck charm. We have joked about it a few times since realeasing the fish. What were the odds that he would be in a boat that would catch another fish of this class, now to take it further the odds are against us of doing it a third time.... All I can say is stay tuned, we will let you know.
One of these days someone will catch a 60 incher.

Incredible! That fish looks so clean, like its hardly been bothered its entire life. Congrats to you Roger! That makes all 3 of you familiar with 50 pound class fish, unreal! I'm happy for all of you, what an experience. Congratulations again, and thanks for posting the awesome pics and story.

MuskyRog - 11/5/2012 2:56 PM I did not see any fins clipped. I thought it had a pretty small head considering and my initial thought is that this fish has crazy potential to grow even bigger. Someone else had commented that maybe the head seemed small because the body is SO big. I would like to think it is going to grow even more.

Sure looks like she's missing her left pelvic fin to me.

I stand corrected, Jody mentioned he saw the clipped fin as well. Somehow with my heart racing I mssed that. Nice to know it is a 19 year old.
Thanks.

Anybody have any pictures of a 50 in class fish on that exact bump board? Looking for some perspective on the girth of that slob!! Congrats on a fish of a lifetime!

First of all congratulations on catching a fish the weight of which 99.9 % of us will never see. A truly amazing capture and release!

Reducing the girth by 1/2 - 1" with the 800 formula is the most accurate way to determine the weight (the reason for the reduce is because the 800 formula was compiled using dead fish). Using the modified 800 formula with a 1" reduction puts that fish at just under 55 pounds, and IMHO very likely a released state record.

It has a clipped fin so you might be able to pinpoint the year class... and I would also attribute the small looking head to a natural comparison to the body. Unless a muskie is very young, the head is proportional to the skeleton/length.

It's very obvious this fish was handled by true professionals and sportsmen from start to finish... nothing was mishandled or exaggerated.  Very impressive!

Jerry, thanks for the explanation on the reducing factor. The primary goal besides catching this beast was to secure some pictures and get it back into the water. It is fun to specualte on the weight but since she never saw a scale I have stayed away from "guessing". I appreciate your words and the reaction from a lot of great fishermen. Good Luck and thanks again, Roger

guides that chase these fat fish really need to get a scale, I have a set up like this in my boat.

first you need a digital scale, 100 - 200 pound max will work well.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Toledo-8213-Professional-Digital-Bench-Scal...

you will also need a power inverter, hook it up to your boat battery and plug in the scale.

If you want your scale certified get a hold of the wieghts and measures guy and meet him at your favorite resort, cost about $100. to certify the scale, it needs to be a class lll scale (I think) and it has to be registered through a bussiness.

That setup is way over the top for me… even having a certified scale in the boat is pretty much a nonissue unless you're considering keeping a fish at a certain weight. No released fish would be eligible for a weight record unless it's kept anyway.  Even though many of us are C&R only like Roger & Co., (and some of us don’t care how much it weighed) it's still pretty normal begin a guessing game after she swims away.

For my money it's hard to beat a $30 bathroom scale in the boat. They are accurate and very fish friendly if you weigh the angler and the fish simultaneously… then it's just a simple matter of re-weighing the angler and subtracting.  If you're considering this option, I recommend not using the digital models because turning it on can be tense and confusing in the heat of the moment. Not only that, all the ones I've used only give you a small window of opportunity to step on it before it resets… and with a big heavy fish obviously every second counts.

Thanks Roger, and it's cool she can now be reasonably aged at 19 YO with just a simple fin clip… obviously in her prime and totally awe-inspiring.

The extra step is really minimal once you set it up a couple times, I have mine hooked up under the deck, all I have to do is open the hatch, turn on the power, grab the scale, put the bump board on it, hit the power switch on the scale, takes less than 15 seconds and theirs no arithmatic involved.

spring scales change with the weather, when it's cold out the more you step on them the higher they read.
