What diameter wire and do you use for bucktails? Do you use the same diameter clevis or a bigger size? Thanks.

Kind of a personal preference if you are making your own tails.

For a shaft, most use a .50 as do I, but some like the .63 also.

For clevis's, I tend to like the # 6 myself, but again some like the bigger # 8.

It is all up to you.

I’m kind of old school when it comes to bucktails, I like them lightweight with a #8 single blade. The ones I make for myself and family use a .046 shaft with light weight components designed for that wire size. I don’t use weights or split rings and just tie marabou on coil with some feathers.

For the price of material, you'll for sure want to experiment with different size wire, just to figure out what you like. I've landed on the .05 with a #6 clevis. The .06 is probably better for durability, but your hands will thank you for not using it. When bucktails get bent up, just reshaft them.

You'll for sure need a bigger clevis than diameter wire of course, the min for .05 wire I'd use is a #6 clevis and a #8 for .06

I use .051" shafts and have never had an issue. For Clevices I would use the conventional style and not the S shaped ones. I have had the stress from both blades pulling on the middle part of the S shaped clevice cause the clevice to snap. This has only happened with the thick .040" Blades but still rubbed me the wrong way. The clevices I use are the "Magnum" sized ones off of lureparts.com. Good luck and have fun!
