Location: Grand Rapids, MI | After years of working through management plans and the regulation review process, Michigan has taken the steps needed to maximize the resources we have and to ensure the future of muskellunge angling in Michigan. Through the work of Michigan Muskie Alliance and the Michigan Warmwater Resources Steering Committee Michigan has just signed new regulations for 2013. The new regulations eliminates the current limit of one 42” or larger muskellunge per day and as of April 1, 2013 the regulation will be one fish 42” or greater per license year with tag. There is no charge for the tag and it is obtained upon request when purchasing a license.

Posts: 410 Location: Wakefield, MI | Any idea how this will affect border lakes? I fish a few lakes on the border with Vilas County. Edited by milje 10/15/2012 5:04 PM

Good question and that's part of the reason why I wanted this here. There is currently discussion on this with the MI-DNR asking WI to follow suit. It will go through the process in WI when that happens. I'm not familiar with the WI process so that's all I can say at this point. I'm asking all of the WI anglers for their support on the boundary waters so the regulation applies to both sides of all waters.

Did they end up doing anything with the Pike regulations?

What happens if you can't revive a fish and it happens twice in one season?

Same thing that happens now with an undersize fish, you have to let it sink. However, I would say if it happens twice in a season that person has really bad luck and needs to examine their release practices.

Location: 31 | Me thinks good timing with the new Michigan record. There are many bodies of water in Michigan that could actually compete with what Minnesota has done with the right kind of stocking and regulations. This is just the first step to better Muskie fisheries, anyone who wets a muskie line in Michigan owes Will and company a thank you. Bravo Will, and to everybody else who has worked so hard to make this happen!

Posts: 415 | Way to go guys, hopefully some other states can use this to help them with their own regs in the future. The precedent has been set. Michigan has world class musky fishing, just look at that new state record. Although I havent fished up there in years, I used to fish those lakes a lot and with the right regs and some compliance they have enormous potential.

Great work! If WI follows suit, it will be a game changer for sure. Again, nice job!!
