Posts: 180 Location: Elgin, IL | Will be going out soon and am looking at a Shimano Tolaro Downtigger/Planer Board 8'6"rods MH. Would this rod handle the job? Have a custom one and would like another but am running out of time.

Posts: 410 Location: Wakefield, MI | I just ordered a 8' Heavy TDR, going to try it out next weekend. If I like it I'm going to order 2 or 3 more. Going to be my sucker/trolling rod, I think. I don't like having my jerkbait rod tied up with a sucker on it.

Posts: 422 | I have had great luck with my $30.00 TDRs. (8' H) I use them for trolling and for suckers and have not had any problems...I caught my PB 51in using one.

I have some decent sized ones, no 14" Jake yet but I was looking at them in the bait shop. Will a heavy TDR handle that? I mainly want it for a cheap sucker setup so I'm not tying up my other rods, but I also do some trolling and wouldn't mind dedicated rods for it.

Posts: 180 Location: Elgin, IL | Good question... What size lures are you guys using with the TDR Hvy? Looking at using 6" and bigger.

Posts: 422 | @ Milje, I have trolled up to 10" baits on them. Honestly, for the money and what you are planning to use them for, it's a no brainer. As the others have said, don't use your high end casting rods for this style of fishing.

Posts: 410 Location: Wakefield, MI | Got my rod today but one of the guides has the Aluminum Oxide insert missing.... EDIT: set up a return, they don't have any more single ones so I ordered a set of 2

Posts: 180 Location: Elgin, IL | Well, I went ahead and raced to Bass Pro Shop and got one. Looks like it'll do good. At least until I get one made to match one I already have. Tend to prefer one's 8'6" or 9'.

Has anybody tried some of the heavy duty e glass or composite catfish rods for trolling/ baiting muskies? If they are up to the task, they seem to be reasonably priced....

Posts: 410 Location: Wakefield, MI | Rods showed up today (about 10 minute after I got home from fishing, of course). They feel like they'll do the job nicely, took a run to Rollie and Helens and grabbed a couple of trolling leaders, a 14" Jake and some other toys. Tomorrow should be a good day.

Posts: 410 Location: Wakefield, MI | It trolls a 14" Jake no problem. Also seems like it's going to work great for suckers, I didn't get anything on it today but it felt really good.

Posts: 410 Location: Wakefield, MI | Caught my first fish on the TDR today, 40" musky while trolling a sucker. Handled really nice, can't wait to try it on a bigger fish.

Posts: 180 Location: Elgin, IL | Good to hear Milje. Will keep that in mind. Used mine on my trip and just trolled the whole day. Wished could of seen how a fight on it would feel. Oh well. It did the job. Still gonna get one to match other as I tend to like the longer length than 8'.

Posts: 410 Location: Wakefield, MI | The Okuma line counter reel I am using seems to be solid so I ordered a second one to go on my other rod, will have a pair of these out this weekend so hopefully I get a chance at a hog on one of them.
