Depends on the depth of Santa's pockets. If Santa has deep pockets, I'd get the Diawa SG27 Linecounter, about $92, or maybe the new 6500C3 Linecounter, about $130. Haven't used the 6500 LC, but I have seen one, and it looked like a sweet piece.

If Santa's pockets are not so deep, one of the Okuma's or Bass Pro's LC's would be nice. About $50-70.

If Santa has shallow Pockets, I would suggest the Shakespeare Tidewater line counter. About $35. I have 2 of these, and have landed about 20 fish with them this year, and have had no problems. Pretty good value so far.

Hope this helps. Merry Christmas to all, and to all a big Muskie![]

I would avoid the Okuma's! (sorry Shep) Nothing but trouble. If you want a line counter it's tough to beat a Diawa. For a good $$$ Cabelas makes a ok one. I have a few of them and they work fine. If you want a trolling reel with out a line counter, a Penn 209 will work fine.

Great timing I just received a flyer from Eangler.com and they have the Daiwa line counter reels on sale.

Good news about the 6500s LC now I have to first find out if they have better clickers and if so I will have to get on their pro team. [;)]

Bill, no reason to apologise. I don't have any Okuma's, as I will either go top end(Diawa), or lower end(Shakespeare). I'm not a middle of the road kinda guy. I'm either gonna get the best, or save some real bucks and make do. Sometimes, you get what you pay for, sometimes you don't. I think the Shakespeare's are a better value than the Okuma's, that's why I bought them. I wouldn't even think about using them on the fish from the Big Pond!

Hi Guys,
If you're interested, I noticed that on lake-link.com, under "Trading Post", some guy has a dozen Daiwa trolling reels for sale for $40.00 each.
I've got the Shakespeare Tidewater models, and they seem to be holding up well, so far.
Happy Thanksgiving,

Geez, Dave's not frozen![;)] And he now trolls?[:0]

How are things? Didn't get up by you this year, but I will remedy that for sure next! Did you have a good last half of the year? How's that Suzie run at trolling speeds? Oh, I forgot. That is only slightly slower than you go when moving to the next spot anyway![]

Shep,

Yes, I did some trolling this fall. Did OK, too.
Am definitely frozen up now.
Put the boat away Tuesday, been working on the tip-ups.
Gotta get a couple walleyes for supper before the Chip closes.
Then, I plan to hibernate!
Dave

Go to www.basspro.com and then to clearance and then to saltwater and you'll find a steal on Diawa linecounter. Diawa is one of the best reels in this type for the non-saltwater angler.

The okuma is ok for normal trolling, planer boards ect. They have held up well for that and suckers. I did have one fail, the gears stripped in the cold and pulling a large dipsey diver. That is too much for the reel. I replaced it with a diawa.

A 6500 line counter? SWEET!

I don't get the shimano bantam line counter. It has no clicker but the regular bantam does. This would be the ultimate reel if they would have put the clicker on it.

The reels that Dave D said that where on lake-link.com, under "Trading Post" are nice, but if you don't hurry the guy will have a few less.

Also, I think I need the Big Jon Electric Planner board mast that's just above it!
