| Greetings from West Virginia! I wanted to take just a minute and introduce myself. My name is Shane and I live on the banks of the Little Kanawha river in central WV. I was born and raised in Colorado and spent 30+ years chasing nothing but trout with a fly rod. Well........... I have never fished for Muskies, but after following this forum for a while now and seeing all of the incredible musky baits, I want to try and make some of my own and see what happens with them.
I have a couple questions. Is there some place that I can buy blank wooden baits that need to be finished or are they all pretty much built from scratch?
Are all musky baits made from wood or are there other more durable bodies available?
Can you recommend a book that I might purchase to learn the basics such as the difference between crank baits, gliders, etc.? I am also curious about how the different "lips" work and how one goes about weighting and testing the baits they have made.
ANY pointers will be greatly appreciated and I look forward to learning all that I can from the amazing artists on this site! Have a great weekend - Shane |

| Hey Shane thought id put in my two cents. I think what you should do before you start making them is buy a couple different styles of baits before you decide to build one. Buy a glide bait, crank bait shallow and deep, a buck tail, some sort of chop bait and a large rubber bait like a bulldawg (magnum or pounder don't mess with the small ones). For colors go 50/50 on natural colors and bright colors. Bring them to your local muskie lake and practice throwing them and find one that you like fishing. Once you narrow down the style of bait you prefer to fish then decide on your equipment for making them. For wood baits a band saw (jigsaw will work to), a router, a drill, a disc sander, and lots of sand paper. If you are experienced in tying flies for trout I would try tying bucktails. Bucktails put just as many fish in the boat as any other lure and can be modified very easily. Don't be disappointed if you don't hook into a muskie right away its a steep learning curve and they can be very frustrating to target. However its worth every minute spent trying to get one. Nothing like a huge fish coming out of nowhere at the boat to engulf your lure. After 15 years of muskie fishing i still shake after catching and releasing a muskie of any size.
