Lose or tight! We set our drag just when the lure we are running just startes to tick then put a 1/4 turn on it. We adjust every lure this way when trolling. We found setting it this way does let you know when you pick up weeds and save rod, reel and rod holder damage. Witch has not happened yet. The reason we are asking this question is that a fishing buddy of ours says that we set them to lose and blames it for losing a fish while fishing on his boat a few days after a trip on the water with him.We have not lost a fish so far.

No question...set your drag loose when you're trolling. The speed of the boat is going to set the hook for you, even when you back off the drag.

You want it set loose, not only for the reasons you mentioned, but also to avoid snapped rods and lines when a fish hammers it. There's plenty of time to tighten up the drag when you're fighting the fish.

Hey guy's,

I agree, you have to set your drag loose while trolling, just tight enough so that the line does not slip out.
A tight drag will not only break your gear (rod, rod holders etc.) it can tear the hooks right out of the fishes mouth. Think about it, your going along at about 3mph and a fish hits, the speed of the boat is going to set the hooks, if your drag is set too tight and there is no "GIVE", you can pull the bait right out of the fishes mouth. You can always tighten the drag as needed while fighting the fish.

Just tight enough that to hold the lure.
If your running the bait behind a board, the reel should "click" when making turns.

P&J, you have it right. The only time I have set it tighter, is with boards in the waves. They can dig in and rip lots of line in the heavier chop.
