I have the Nike fuel band and I put it on and fished from about 545 to 11 and I burnt 1123 calories. Very interesting. Screw the gym. Just fish! Edited by toothycritter88 9/15/2012 2:58 PM Attachments ---------------- PicsArt_1347738942535.jpg (19KB - 310 downloads)

Yeah but can it count the offsetting calories you intake while fishing like jerky, dots, cookies, chips, redbull and Dagwood sandwhiches?

Posts: 97 Location: Milwaukee, WI | Have you calculated how many calories you burn while doing "normal" activities around the house? The difference would be an accurate count of the calories burned. I'm actually quite interested.

You typically burn around 2000-2500 calories a day depending on your normal activities and physical condition. So muskie fishing fits into a normal day, I still think the gym is a pretty good idea. BR

Posts: 291 Location: Madison, WI | I hate to burst a bubble here but I just dont see how someone can burn those calories by standing still. A good rule of thumb for running and burning calories is the following: Weight x .75 x Miles Ran = calories burned. so for example: 225 lbs x .75 x 5 miles run = 844 calories. This is fairly close to accurate. I have talked with people who are personal trainers, etc. and that is a good general equation that is, from what I am told, accurate. I work out on an elliptical machine and a 35-45 minute work at a high resistance usually results in 750-900 calories burned. My friend just purchases a similar calorie counter to the nike one and it told him he had burned 2,700 calories during a 3 mile run. Which is impossible unless it were at about a 15% grade and at an elevation of 7,000 feet. If "normal" activities in a day burned 2,000-2,500 calories a day, we would all be in incredible shape and be allowed to eat 4,000-5,000 calories a day and still look thin. 4,000 calories a day would be the equivalent to 3 super sized whopper value meals for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Now if u work in construction or hard core manual labor, then I could see burning alot of calories in a 8-12 hour day. As for the band reading 1,100, it has to be something with the fast movements your wrists and arms are making when casting, in which it thinks your body is moving the same amount. Wasnt this brought up a year or so ago when someone thought you could burn 5,000 calories a day musky fishing? I do think musky fishing is a good upper body workout however I just dont see how the calorie burn could be that high. If it really was, screw the gym.

So anyway, three regular sized whopper value meals is equal to 4,500 calories, give or take. Not sure if you were talking about 3 or 9 in a day with that post, but I'm assuming three. Regardless, you're way low in the calorie count. http://www.myfitnesspal.com/food/calories/burger-king-whopper-value...

Ok I didn't realize the amount of doctors and scientists were musky fisherman. It was a serious statement. You don't have to make sure you prove someone wrong every chance you get.

No one is berating you for posting. It's an interesting observation, but without comparison to "baseline" values it's just a number without meaning. I think there are a number of people that would be curious/interested to see how 1123 compares to the same duration of time spent on the job or in a non-fishing setting.

Standing still? You might not be moving forward or backward, but you are constantly balancing yourself. It takes your whole body to do so and you are doing this 100% of the time while you are fishing. Throw in some wind and I can completely see how these calories could be burned.

Posts: 112 | I'm not sure about the Nike fuel band, but very skeptical. I know ellipticals grossly over estimate calories burned. Wish they were correct. 1200 calories is roughly equivalent to 8-10 miles of running. Edited by Seilers 9/17/2012 12:26 PM

This discussion got me to thinking about what I typically eat in the boat and how much muskie fishing contributes to fat gain rather than calorie burn. My typical late afternoon through end of the day outing consists of: 600 Calories - 28g Fat - Jimmy John’s #5 Vito 160 Calories – 8g Fat - Small Bag of Chips 250 Calories – 20oz Soda 340 Calories - 32g Fat - 2oz Smokehouse Almonds 130 Calories - Half box of DOT’s 1,630 Total Calories 82 Total Fat Men age 19 to 30 years old should eat 2,400 to 3,000 calories. Between ages 31 and 50, men's calorie needs are 2,200 to 3,000. Men over 50 require between 2,000 and 2,800 calories daily with only 20-35% coming from fat. So my typical late afternoon to end of day outing represents approximately 65% of my total day calories and approximately 110% of the fat I should intake in a day and I haven’t even considered breakfast or lunch. I by no means consider myself a health nut but in contrast I fish guys that will add to the list above with another half bag of chips, one or two more bottles of soda, and beef sticks and cheese curds, etc so it’s no wonder the average musky angler isn’t exactly slim.

I think it is a great thread and lots of good information exchanged. I certainly think burning 1100 calories in over 5 hours of fishing is very possible. It might even be higher depending on the person. I think the issue is you will burn far more at the gym. I think a couple hundred calories an hour falls into normal day to day activity. However an open discussion on calories with the goal to be healthier is great. I wear a heart monitor/calorie counter when I mtn bike here in CO and depending on intensity it changes constantly. However any type of calorie burning is better than none. BR Edited by BenR 9/17/2012 12:40 PM

Posts: 2384 Location: On the X that marks the mucky spot | I've done this with my heart rate monitor back when I was doing a lot of physical training. My heart rate was rarely elevated and therefore didn't burn that many more calories then at my normal rate. In think in a day of fishing it was aprox 200-300 more then my normal. For reference we burn about 100-200ish calories an hour being awake and moving depending on your fitness level. So if you're out in the boat for 5-7 hours you will naturally burn about 800-1000 calories. It's the calories above and beyond that number that really matter for most of us. Now if you're ripping or burning and elevating your heart rate that calorie total can go up. If your resting heart rate is in the 80-90 range and you increase it for a prolonged time in the 110-120bpm you're doing the equivalent of taking a brisk walk for that duration. Do that over several hours and you're getting somewhere.

That's what I was thinking. And somehow I manage to lose 5# in a week on Eagle every year, despite the fact that I eat twice as much. As to the other question? If we were out every day of the week putting in 8 hours, muskie fishermen as a whole would look a lot different. But one day a week of moderate execise isn't going to change you if you spend the other 6 sitting at a desk and eating crap.
