Posts: 1270 | HAven't had a chance to play with one very much but I was able to use one for a couple hours. Performance wise basically the same as a Toro with 5.4 gears but the handle is out of this world! The new double paddeled handle will be on all my musky reels next year instead of single power handles. And if you want a single power handle the one it comes with is a monster. The bent handle and star wheel make the reel seem a little smaller even though it's not, it just makes it more compact.

Are the 5.4:1 gears beefy enough to throw d10s? I'm thinking about getting one as an all purpose reel but also as a d10 backup reel. Should I be concerned about burning up the gears if I threw d10s with it for a full week if I had to? Don't want to trash a $300 reel using it for something it shouldn't.

I own the Revo Toro 5:4.1 the old version and I have been using and burning blades 8s, 9s, 10s, 11s, 12s, and 13s for two straight years now... Have no issues and will buy another one because of it. It is a great reel. Can't speak for the new one, but I would imagine that it is just as good or better with new technologies.

Posts: 814 | No it won't blow out the gears... Also NO ONE is burning blades with the 5.4 revo period...you may think your burning but really your not. But yes it should be a great all around reel. If you want to burn for real...get a trini or a tranx.

Lot and lots of time and practice

I didn't actually measure them but I would say that yes they are the same, or so close to the same that it wouldn't matter, as the other Toro handles.
really? |

If you want to burn for real...get a trini or a tranx. people were"burning"blades long before all the salt water reels and I can crank small blades in at over 3mph with the revo in 5.4 ratio so that may not be burning in your eyes but it seals the deal for me better than friends with saltists and trinidads.

rjhyland - 9/15/2012 7:36 PM Wow I like that new Daiwa. Not to hijack the Revo thread but that is a sharp looking reel. 35" a crank, a hundy less than a 300D. Hmmmmmmm decisions, decisions. They are totally different reels, the 300D is not going to burn DB 10's. BR

The 300D is a small reel. I have used it a couple of days so far and it is amazing, but I would go with the 400D if I wanted to use it for 10's. It is noticeable smaller in size than a curado 300. Awesome reel, but I think the 400D is probably the best real to date for muskie applications. I will say before I spend 300 on any other reel, you need try a new calcutta, it is the first reel I have used that actually seems like a progression in reels, the rest were just more durable. Posts: 456 Location: Kansas City BBQ Capitol of the world | "The New 300D has a 5.6:1 gears and a 30" of line pickup and the 400D has a 5.1:1 and a 27" line pickup." The 300D is a faster reel than the 400 so the size being a bit larger will make it better for 10"s? I'm going to buy a new reel in the next couple weeks so I'm trying to absorb all this. Anyone bought that new Daiwa and any feed back on it? Ron

I just looked at the reel again and yes they are the same thickness but if you want to use them on a standard Toro or a Winch you will need to get the star wheel off of an NaCl also or the star wheel will hit the handle.

What are you going to do with the DC10's? Are you going to try burning them as fast as humanly possible? Then you should get a Trinidad, Avet, or some other salt water type reel. But if you're going to retrieve them like the other 99% of us there are plenty of reels that will work just fine for normal retrieves of DC10's. Any of the quality reels with a gear ratio in the 4, 5, or 6 range will work just fine for normal retrieves. I prefer a 5 to 1 ratio myself. For all the talk about burning DC10's there are not many people that do it day in and day out simply because it's real work regardless of what reel you're using. To do it right you need a reel that's so big that IMHO it takes the fun right out of musky fishing. If I have to use a reel designed for yellowfin tuna and sweat my butt off reeling as fast as humanly possible I'll take up perch fishing!
