I've drove a 617 for a week , it had a 135 opti on it and wasn't a "speed demon" the boat would run right around 45 mph tops. I always think its best to max HP. I'm sure with the right prop you will get out of the hole fine with the 115 but I'd say you'll be lucky to run much over 40mph... I'd want a 150 on it

I run a 617 with a 125 2 stroke merc on it. It will do 40 with just me in it and calm water. I always figured the ideal motor would be a 140 Suzuki four stroke. But I've talked to the guys at Frankie's, including one guy who used to own a 617, and they all swore by the 115 four stroke for this boat. You definitely would lose some hole shot, but they said its almost negligible and you gain the ability to troll way down with your main motor. That said, if I ever repower, I'll find myself a 140 suzuki.

But I love the boat.

You could get away with the 115, but the 617 is a heavy boat as it was part of the fisherman series. It all depends on how you fish our what you want to do.

If you want lots of speed to get from spot to spot with good hole shot, or do some tubing with the kids, you will struggle with the 115 in my opinion.

If you just like to cruise from spot to spot and like to troll, you should be OK knowing in general your hole shot will not be strong along with your top end.

I was lucky enough to find my 617 with a 150 Opti a number of years ago and it has been an all around great performing boat and motor combination.

If there is anything else, let me know.

I've been running a 2003 617 with a 115 Johnson 4-stroke for the past 5 years. I get between 40 to 41 MPH when plained (and my stainless steel prop in mint condition - anyone know a guy to fix a stainless steel prop...ha). You get a guy in the back (3 guys) and a box full of walleye, it will take some to plain out. Otherwise, once plained you get the same speed. No hole shot problems with two guys or limited weight in back. The 115 is perfect for backtrolling with the right drift sock - 0.8 to 1.2 for snap jigging the reclaim. But for buzzing around and ski fishing, great motor size in my opinion. On LOTW, Leech, Winnie, the pond, other large lakes I stay under 4000 RPMS, get awesome gas milage and still go 32 mph. I'm a fan, with only certain circumstances I wish the motor was maxed out (4 guys in a boat in 4-5 waves). So agree with Pal, depends if you want the extra speed.

If you troll the 115 is much better motor than the 140, the 115 troll done so you do not need a kicker, my buddy looked into it when he was buying his boat, and he went witht he 115 for this reason, money was no issue for him, yes loose some top end. But with gas at almost $4 a gallon how many are running WOT. If you run 40 miles a day you may gain 5 minutes of fishing.
