I am thinking about picking up an air brush & compressor to paint up some lures over the winter. Can anyone recommend a brand that they trust? Dependable, good quality, etc? Thanks.

For an air brush I run 6 Pashea's (sorry about the spelling).
I've been using them daily for around 12 years, and they only have been rebuild once or twice.

My compresser I got at Builders Sqaure for about $300.00 and I will be getting a nre one this winter. But it's lasted aboutthe same amount of time.

I got the Aztec made by Testors and I am quite happy with it. It provides both double and single action and is really easy to use. It comes with about six different tips for spraying different types of paints. It's amazing how many colors of acrylics that are avail. I got a compressor in my garage that I use to fill up a spare air tank. I added a regulator to it and can paint 3 or 4 baits before I need to fill it again. Totally portable and serves me well. After you get a little experience you can spray the old lady's nails. LOL

I’m thinking about getting into it also. What’s the difference between double action and single action? Are there less fumes involved in airbrushing compared to spray cans? Thanks

NXTWRLDRCRD,

For good general airbrush info, and the answers to your questions, check out the following websites:

www.automist2000.com
www.airheadairbrush.com

Hope this helps you out; I'm just getting started, myself. I've been tying bucktail on hooks and making my own spinner bodies.

Good luck,

RAZE1,

Which model of the Testor Aztek do you use? I looked at the A2706 kit as a starter for small quantity work, but it's a single action and I'd really like to go with a double action. I'll be using a CO2 tank or a compressed air tank for air instead of a compressor. What do you recommend?

Thanks,
Butch

Butch,
I got the one that comes in a wooden case, which, by the way, probably costs more than the brush itself. I went to Tractor Supply yesterday, formerly Quality Farm & Fleet, and they had small compressors for $ 79.95. Great deal. Any air source is fine when only doing a few baits at a time, but C02 aint cheap either and will add up to a compressor over the course. Michaels has 40% off coupons that applies to airbrushes as well. Double-action gives you control over air flow as well as paint flow. Most of the pros use Paasche and you can spend as much as you like on one of those.

Thanks you Bucktail Butch for the great links! I’ve already added them to my list of favs. It looks like I’m on the verge of a new obsession. I can’t believe all the different colors available, I even found those fancy color changing paints. Maybe after a few winters practicing on lures, I'll find myself spending the off season somewhere tropical applying body paints to firm, young, gravity deifying, voluptuous… Ah to dream…
I just thought of a new lure pattern… tan tits

I think the main difference in a single or double action Air brush is with a double action brush you can vary the air to paint ratio easier. If your painting artwork that will end up on a wall, this might be something you would want. For fishing lures, the single action works fine. Remember the K.I.S.S. Theory. Keep it simple stupid!

As far as fumes go, make sure the room is well ventilated and wear a respirator mask.

I would agree with Bill The paasche single action with a no.3 tip would do you fine for all around airbrushing.

Actualy it depends on what ones needs are and what you would expect from your equipment. There has been several good answers here. Aztecs, Paasche, Badgers, etc are good brushes. Single or dual stage depends on what your use will be or what exactly you would to do.
In shop I have 60 airbrushes, 50 of them online and 10 in reserve or spares as one might call them. Down time is exspensive so should one go bad I put a new one in it's place than repair the bad one. If I can't repair it , it is sent back to the manufacturer for repair. I have tried several kinds including Paasche, The Paasche cost me $17.00 for repair when it went down. All my brushes now are Badgers. They are lifetime gaurranteed and I have never been charged for repair when needed. I use single feed and dual feeds ranging from 150's, 250's and the crescendo 75's. These brushes take a beating and keep coming back for more.
That is of course my two cents but it has paid off greatly for us with the use my brushes get. It still is a matter of choice. For limited usage as for your own lures, it doesn't really matter just what ever you are comfortable with. Compressor doesn't need to be elaborate either. I think Bill would agree, that the more equipment you end up using the bigger the compressor, but for your purpose you would only need something small.

My question is what brand of paints are you using? I have tried ModelMasters and some others, but trying to find a good water based paint with lots of colors has been difficult. Any ideas?

GMan,

Check out:

www.createxcolors.com

I just stumbled across the site while linking through airbrush related websites. I haven't tried their products yet, but it sounds pretty good to me. They are available on line through:

www.bearair.com
www.aartticeco.com
www.dixieart.com

Good luck,

Gman,
I use all automotive lacquers. The lacquer is strong enough to "etch" into the plastic lure as a base coat. On wooden lures I use the same but I start the base coat out with a waterproofer ( campatable with lacquer) than I paint it with lacquer also. Top coats are also automotive. When you paint on a professional basis you need the better grdes of paint. But if your painting for your own use enamel or acrylics will suffice. Water based paints will not "etch" into the plastic for a bond so you will need to prime the plastic first. To keep the cost down in paint your best bet would probably be acrylic enamel which will work well but take a little longer to dry ( not much ) You can get it in auto stores in the touch up paints. I have tried createx ( water based) and it will work if you get the right stuff. It doesn't spray as smooth as the solvent based paints. If you use water based, clean your guns out with warm water until clean. Once it dries and it isn't properly cleaned it is hard to get out of the gun.
Hope this helps you out and good luck in your endeavors.
