Location: Eau Claire,WI | Hi,I have a new glide bait that will not glide side to side. It has a up/down motion with hardly any roll.On the straight retrieve it has a decent "S" pattern but not what I am looking for in a glider. I have tried straight and floro leaders and nothing has helped.I also made sure the hook handers and eye were not bent out of shape. Anyone have any ideas or is it another lure for the ole box of shame. I hate it when you spend $30 for a lure and it's a dud... Any help will be Gratefull!!! Paul

Location: Eau Claire,WI | The lure is a 7 inch Smuttly Dog. I have a few of these lures and all have been great!

Posts: 571 | Have you tried contacting the bait maker? http://muskie.outdoorsfirst.com/board/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=50...

Posts: 605 Location: Marshfield, WI | Sometimes adding a split ring to the line tie or bending the line tie to the side slightly can help. That has worked for me on squirkos.

Posts: 76 | Ditto on contacting the maker. I would be willing to bet if it glides up and down not side to side it isn't balanced correctly. One way to tell is add a 1/4oz bank sinker on one or the other front or back hook split ring and see which fixes it. May even take adding to both? Don

Posts: 152 Location: Nowhere near where I should be | Try putting some slack in your twitches, and a split ring will always help, it loosens the connection point allowing more play.

Posts: 909 | Try this! Instead of jerking the rod up and down, just use the turning of the reel for the Glide! Reel,Stop, Reel, Stop, reel stop...(About a half a turn before stopping) This is how I have to use my Smuttly as well! Hope this helps!

Posts: 78 Location: In the Weeds | Some gliders i seem to have to really jerk, but some its more of a pull rather than a snap or jerk. Try a split ring too.

Posts: 4266 | Rod tip low...always. Soft taps, not pulls. If it's going up and down, it's probably weighted too lightly. Add bigger hooks for more weight, and always pause after every tap or two.

Posts: 458 | This may sound weird but try to throw your bait in a pool or find some real clear water. Watch the effect you have on the bait closely and learn what each twitch, tap or pull does to the bait. The pause can be a killer.
