Nice river fish. Catching them on the fly most be a rush.

Looks like a chartruese and orange streamer on an intermediate line... Nice fish!! Is that your drift boat or were you with a guide?

Nice Fish! I am an avid fly fisherman for trout and steelhead and wanted to try my hand at muskie. I've searched the history and read a lot of options. I was thinking of trying one of those Echo Edge 8'4" 10wt. I was just wondering what you like to use (as far as rod, line, and leader)? Thanks!

Hi everyone. Yes it is my drift boat. Was fishing with a friend that day but I do a little guiding up here for smallmouth and muskies. It is a hyde drift boat. The fly was a articulating streamer. Ties with buck tail, flashaboo, and some long saddle hackles. Was fishing with an old sage rplx 10 weight with intermediate line. The intermediate line seems to cast well but sometimes I use a sink tip line or floating line. The echo rod is pretty nice. Pat from the flyfishers a flyshop in Milwaukee was fishing with me a couple of weeks ago and he had a 10 weight and it worked well. I like 10, 11 and sometimes even 12 weights. I usually put on a short section of heavy mono for a butt section either tied with an albright not or looped to the end of the fly line. then loop a section of usually 25 pound maxima to the butt section. Then a piece of tiger wire albright knot to the maxima. I use a loop knot to the fly. steve

just a few flies that I tied the other day. They are around 6 or 7 inches long. Sometimes use bigger flies then this but they are harder to cast.

sorry pic didn't load. Took the pic of the flies with a canon slr but a firewall alert. Maybe the file was too big.

Do you prefer a fast rod or do you like a mod-fast rod for casting those larger flies? Also, do you know where I could find a quality large topwater fly for Muskie?

You can send the flies to me and I'll take a photo and upload it for you. I tried out 2 different 12 weights and didn't care for either, 10 is just right. Mastery Series streamer express for line. Now I just need flies. Tough to find in Price County. I bought one each of all available flies within 20 miles so I now have 5 crappy flies.

yeah I think mine are pretty much all fast action rods. Not really sure if it makes a difference to mod-fast. Pretty much just what you get used to. The fly that you casts makes a big difference. I try to tie mine flaring out the bucktail fibers to create the profile of a bigger fly with as little material as possible. Also the size and weights of the hooks makes a big difference in casting. The heavier thick saltwater hooks I stay away from. As for topwater flies I really don't use them much. Some of the heads of my patterns I tie in and flare some deer hair material which when it is tied down it flares out and helps to make the fly float on top. It creates kind of a wake when it swings in the current or stripped in. Some of the flyshops sell topwater stuff or you could check on the computer. Umpqua or rainey river flies I think is another maker. You could check with Pat Ehlers at his flyshop in Milwaukee also as he has a nice selection of flies and has a websiste, his flyshop is called the flyfishers.

Can you effectively fish large musky streamers with floating line? I assume you can, but was wondering if the short leader length would affect how your flies moves in the water.

Try Musky Country Outfitters. They are out of the Hayward area. They tie some AWESOME musky flies. They can be pricey, but worth it. http://muskycountryoutfitters.com/Musky-Flies.aspx

Thanks for the tip, Joel. I've actually been checking out AA's Primo Tails for the last year, might have to pull the trigger on 1 or 10.

Don't think they carry any flies. There is a flyshop in Hayward that has some though. Hayward flyfishing company is the name of the place.

NO problem with a floating line. I use a floating line most of the time especially this time of the year. I like to lengthen my leader with a floating line. 7 or 8 foot total length seems to work fine.

Let me know if you have any issues getting some. I may have a connection or two there.

Definitely worth the money. I did tie a few of his Hang Time flies, but after I bought a real one, mine did not do them justice lol. They still catch fish though haha.
