| I need to get two new trolling motor batteries, was wondering what everyone was using and your thoughts on the best battery. | |||
| |||
| I have used batteries from Remy Battery for years. They usually last me 4 to 5 years. And they are priced reasonably. | |||

| Ralph- I was in the same situation that you are in earlier in the year. I subscribe to Bass and Wallye Boats Mag and also look on http://www.wmi.org/bassfish/index.html and www.bassboatcentral.com and found some of the best batteries. They are Trojan batteries. I bought the SCS225. I picked them up in Bensenville at Battery Service Corp for $70-75 each. These are great, granted they are brand new, but 10hrs + of using the motor and they still have plenty left. Ask Luke_Chinewalker, he can vouch. These are the #1 rated marine batt. I was getting sick of the delco's and the stowaways only lasting 2 years, these should get 4-5yrs. As soon as the starter batt goes out, I will replace that too. | |||

| Walking_Holy is right, don't mess with those garbage car batteries masquerading as marine batteries. The trade off with the Trojan's is weight. Those things are tanks at 66lbs each but the power is awesome. Compare the numbers and decide for yourself. Nothing can hold a candle to the hours/amps of a Trojan, except maybe the gel batteries but who wants to drop $200-300/ea? http://www.batteryservice.com/table.htm | |||

| Nothing that I have ever used has even come close to the dependability and longevity of the Trojans I put in my last boat. I, too will need new Batteries this next Spring. Nothing but Trojans will go in my boat. Just buy these bad boys and you WILL be happy. AA Battery in the Twin Cities carries them. | |||

| I don't usually spend much on batteries. I've run Wally Worlds marine batteries the last couple years without any problems. Just remember to bring your batteries inside for the winter or like me this year you may have to replace one. Brian | |||

| Hi Ralph- I don't have any advice for a battery, but when you get your new batteries you have to try this product called THERMOIL. I used to have to get a new battery every year until I started using this stuff. Not only will it increase the life of your batteries, but it seems that I can go a lot longer between charges. Check out the website: www.thermoilbatteries.com Tight lines!! Thad Hinshaw | |||

| You do not have to bring your batteries inside for the winter. In fact, it is better if you leave them in the cold. As long as they are at full charge, they will not freeze. All batteries self discharge. They do so at a faster rate when warm, and a much slower rate when cold. Keep a true, fully auotmatic charger on them, and you'll have no problems over winter. | |||
| |||
| Have had 2 Stowaways(GNB) in 8 years, both still work, first one just discharges a little quicker thus the new one. Never use less then a 10 amp charger regardless of what you read or hear. Deep Cycle Batteries are made to be charged at at least 10 amps. 15 amps is even better. 2amp is for lawn and garden batteries or motorcycle batteries. Over winter ensure it is fully charged at least once a month. | |||

| Shep, you mean leave them in the garage plugged into the auto battery charger the entire winter? I am not sure I understood your suggestion. | |||
| |||
| Running Hot, where is this place in Bensenville at? Do they have a web site or do you have a phone number? Please, post, thanks. | |||
| |||
| Ralph, running hot and luke chinewalker have it right. My battery is four years old and running strong. They make batteries for alot of dealers, Ed Shirley's and I think Kolar bait and tackle. They make several sizes, I have the honkingest big one they make, must weigh over 60lbs. Do a yellow page search on yahoo for them and the addy will pop up and you can get a map from that. | |||
| |||
| Fish on, I mean, you do not have to take them out of the boat just because it's winter. But you must make sure the level is checked, and they are fully charged. A hydrometer is the best way to check for full charge. But if the batteries are in good shape, and fully charged, the cold will not affect them. You may plug in your charger occaisionally, just to be sure they have full charge. I've posted this link before, and I refer to it often. It has a lot of good info, and dispells some myths about your batteries. http://www.milwaukee-muskies-inc.org/Speakers_Adobe/01-05-22_Unders... | |||

| Look at the link in my post above for contact info at Battery Service Corp. | |||

| Thanks guy's!!!!![:)] I will have to look into the Trojan line and see what I come up with. | |||

| I looked at the article referenced on lead acid batteries and found that the comments made aboutit we're only accurate under certain conditions. It says in the article that a fully charged battery will freeze at -60 degrees. It dosen't get that cold he're in Minnesota so I wouldn't have to worry about that. However, that wasn't all it said. If the battery is not fully charged and that charge maintained by periodic charging the battery can freeze at lower temps than -60. The author cautions to not let your battery freeze. He also says in the article that if your battery has frozen and the temp did not reach -60 then you know it wasn't at full charge. I store my boat outside in a storage lot where it is not easy for me to periodically charge the batteries in the months between Oct and May. That's why I'll bring my batteries indoors this winter. Last year one of my batteries obviously did not stay at full charge for that period of time, and froze. Brian | |||

| I use the 115 amp batteries from Wal Mart, too. Last year, Mr. Marine in Fond Du Lac rigged my boat and put 115 amp Exide batteries in the rig. I was very happy with them, but one season is not really a test. | |||

| Sprotsman's Warehouse carries the Trojan Batteries. [;)] | |||
