Location: Lake Tomahawk, WI

Hey guys,

Was wondering if anyone has fished the US side of Rainy this time of year. Have a cousin and his family getting a houseboat next week and they were asking me for some tips. I would think that the fishing would be centered around off-shore humps, but I've never been there in August. Thanks in advance for the help.

I was at Rainy with my dad for a quick two day adventure on July 5th and 6th before going to LOTW for a week. I had never been there before. We targeted walleye and pike. At that time the eyes were setting up on the humps already and we caught them on bottom in water 40' - 60' deep. We targeted pike around the islands outside of large shallow bays. We found pike located in areas where cabbage bordered basin water. We had no problem locating fish in either situation. We also caught both species trolling over 100' of water. We found bait and gamefish suspended 20' - 40' down. We trolled deep divers on 3 way rigs and just hammered the fish. I mean hundreds of eyes and pike.

I've spent most of my time NW Ontario in June, July, and September for a reason. August would be the last month that I would choose.

That being said the fish will be affected by the temperature of the water. If the water is very warm the fish will be down deeper and will come up during rains, and for the night.

In any moth of the year, except August, it should be relatively easy to find smallmouth bass in NW Ontario. If all else fails while looking for bass, then find some deep rocks and drop a jig with a grub or minnow right alongside the bigger rocks. Even if the fish are inactive a grub or minnow right on top of them should elicit a response.

Muskies do not like warm water temperatures so they will probably be deeper. Even if they are suspended, however, muskies will always relate to structure.

Main lake temp is 78. Walleyes just moved out to 30'. Have your cousins go to www.rainylakrhouseboats.com for up to date fishing reports.

The walleyes are still going strong just got back from there this weeked we caught a boat load of walleyes and a bunch of brownies walleyes were in 30 to 40 feet of water and the bas were like 10 to 15 feet of water in big isolated boulders. trolled spiners and lindy rigs till we found the eyes then just sat on top and jig them with leechs and minnows. hope this helps caught a few pike while catching walleyes.
