I'm looking to try some row trolling. Everything I read about trolling indicates that very long leaders should be used. Why is this?

If I put my casting outfit with a casting leader in a rod holder and row with it am I wasting my time?

Not if the water is free of floaters, and you can check them easily.

A couple of quick reasons for the longer leaders are to protect the fish when it rolls on the line, protect the line around rocks, and just as importantly... whatever method you are using to keep floaters off of your lure collect there, about 36" up the line away from the lure.
