Before making a decision on a replacement, does any one want to recommend a great pair of plier for releasing musky? The only prerequisites are that they be high quality, long (I've been hooked to a musky before!), durable, and rust-proof.

Location: Canada | Kinda hard to see but the plier jaws when closed have oval? round? cut outs down the sides and one in the front, great for grabbing and holding onto musky sized hooks. |

Location: Contrarian Island | brian...i have about 5 pairs of different types/lengths I carry at all times...i tend to use an 11" pair w the curved tip the most (shimano brand, blue handle) ..I did pick a 16" straight one on ebay this year...for those times you have to get really down in there...i wish Knipex made a hook cutter w a longer handle....as far as not rusting...wd 40!

Location: Hayward, WI | Those Gear Wrench pliers Pikemaster posted are pretty cool. I handled some back when I worked at Fastenal. The double joint opens the jaws up quite wide without needing to move the handles much. Not sure about the gripping strength of the jaws but am tempted to pick up a pair to try out.
Myself - I use about an 11" pair of Cabelas needle nose pliers that were pretty reasonably priced. They have worked well for me and have been pretty rust proof.

| CU301DSV has it right. Those are by far and away the best pliers for unhooking muskies period. I've. Been using them for over a dozen years and wouldn't even consider anything else. Although I'm down to one set after donating one to lotw. Didn't know they still made the ones with the cutouts in the jaws. When I get back home from being on the road a set is going to be ordred imediately.
Oh, and it doesn't get any higher quality than snap on. The machining on the jaws actually grabs hooks instead of just sliding around on them like cheaper pliers. |
