Meyer Brothers Win Muskie Country™ Lake Mohawksin Event

The WORLD MUSKIE TOURNAMENT SERIES™ (WMT Series™) visited Tomahawk this past weekend for a one- day qualifying Muskie Country Tournament Circuit™ (MCTC™) event on Lake Mohawksin Saturday, June 30 th. This year’s Mohawksin tourney marks the twelfth year in a row that the WMT Series™ hosted an event on the popular muskie waters of Lake Mohawksin and it didn’t fail to live up to its reputation as a great muskie fishery. Most of the anglers reported having multiple opportunities at big fish throughout the day but seven muskies over 34 inches would “stay on the hooks” to be registered for the competition.

The fishing activity started out as slow in the calm of the morning but as the wind started to pick up just before 8:00am, the muskie activity started to increase. At 7:50am, the first muskie would be measured by Gerry and Alex Frantz with a 35 ¾ incher. Working a small soft plastic swim bait near cover relating to current, the team of Brad Wirt and Kurt Hagen were able to score on a dandy 40 ½ inch trophy at 8:49am that would give the duo a second place finish. James Sievwright and Nick Starr would land a 38 ½” muskie at 10:22am by also concentrating their efforts near current breaks on a stretch of the river. By 11:10am, the brothers Rom and Ryan Meyer would be done for the day with their second muskie of 36 ½ inches, adding to their earlier catch of a hefty 46” beauty giving the two the victory. The Meyer’s also used current to pinpoint their location to make contact with their two winning fish, but this time they located them on the main lake and used the wind as the source of the water flow that concentrated the muskies. Although the wind generated current was key to the Meyer’s success, the presence of cover in the form of wood stumps with coontail and cabbage was needed as well. Both of the Meyer’s muskies came on the Badwater Bait’s Mag/6 Mogambo Bucktail. Fishing alone, Dan Ballweg scored on a 37 ¾ incher at 11:53am. The final fish of the day would be captured at 12:30pm by the team of Bryan Hoffman and Jason Thiel measuring 34 inches.

The MUSKIE COUNTRY TOURNAMENT CIRCUIT™ Lake Mohawksin tournament top five finishers were:

1st – Ron & Ryan Meyer
2nd – Brad Wirt/Kurt Hagen
3rd – James Sievwright/Nick Starr
4th – Dan Ballweg
5th – Gerry & Alex Frantz

Abendroth's Win Muskie Country™ Boom Lake Qualifier

The WORLD MUSKIE TOURNAMENT SERIES™ (WMT Series™) hosted the twelfth one-day qualifier for the 2012 Muskie Country Tournament Circuit™ (MCTC™) season on the Boom Lake Chain in Rhinelander Sunday, July 1st. The still of the Sunday morning made for very tough conditions as only five teams were able to scratch out 34 inch or better muskies for the day. But even though the less than ideal conditions prevailed throughout the day, most anglers had several opportunities at muskies with multiple fish reported to have been on only to escape during the battle.

Only ten minutes in to the competition at 6:10am, the team of Randy Kauranen and Phil Markgraf would tally a 34.25 inch muskie giving hope that the day's muskie action would be like what the WMT Series™ has been accustom to when a muskie qualifier is hosted on Boom Lake, but it wasn't to be as the anglers had to wait for the weather to pick up and create some wind action. Finally the afternoon ushered in some wind and boating activity that produced some nice wave action resulting in an obvious improvement in the muskie attitude. At 12:35pm, Don Groskopf and Dan Winkler would land a 37.25 inch muskie but three cast after the duo released their muskie, they would proceed to lose a mid-forty inch muskie that effectively cost them the victory. Snatching the victory from Groskopf and Winkler only five minutes later would be the brothers, Kevin and Scott Abendroth when they scored on a 38.50 incher at 12:40pm. Another 34.25 incher would be scored at 1:24pm by Phil Schweik and John Sprabel giving the team a fifth place finish due to the tie breaker of time. The final muskie of the contest would come at 1:49pm by Rob Rodiziezak and Bob Pisut measuring 36.50 inches.

The MUSKIE COUNTRY TOURNAMENT CIRCUIT™ Boom Lake Chain tournament top five finishers were:

1st – Kevin & Scott Abendroth
2nd – Don Groskopf/Dan Winkler
3rd – Rob Rodiziezak/Bob Pisut
4th – Randy Kauranen/Phil Markgraf
5th – Phil Schweik/John Sparbel

The MUSKIE COUNTRY TOURNAMENT CIRCUIT™ will conclude the season with the final two one-day events at Bone Lake on Saturday, September 8th and on the following Sunday at Lake Wapogasset at which time the top fifty point leaders will be invited to compete in the most prestigious and histories highest pay-out for a muskie tournament series championship, the WMT Series™ Invitational Championship™. The next tournament for the WMT SERIES ™ will be the Pro-MAC™ Three Lakes MUSKIE SUMMIT OPEN™ held on the weekend of August 4th & 5th.
