Location: Northern Illinois | In summer, usually try to fish pretty tight to structure when I fish. Probably because of the pressured lakes I usually fish and I don't have the abilty/equipment to effectively track open water and schools of baitfish. I usually fish right on the outside edge, over or through the weeds, points, timber, rocks, or shallow. However, I've been noticing alot of muskie fishermen (and fish caught) a couple of casts beyond the weedline into open water or the main lake basin. How far out beyond the outside weedline does everyone usually check? |

Location: Hayward, WI | There's a great discussion going on over 4 pages that talks about fishing basin/suspended fish. I'm not an expert on this yet, but in the summer, about the shallowest I fish would have my baits landing just at the weedline and coming back over deeper water. Once the thermocline sets up where I fish in WI, I notice a movement of fish pushing out to the deepest weedline and deeper. Some lakes have it more than others, but fish can be right out in the middle of the lake so there's no limit to how far out you can go. I've caught fish within the top 10 feet over 70+ feet of water, but am still a little more comfortable if I am within a cast or two of some sort of structure. True basin fishing is something I need to get more comfortable with.
