Im from buffalo originally, but I currently reside in Wisconsin. Within a month I will be making the journey home to visit with family for a week or so. So I figured what a perfect time to fish some new muskie waters The thing is eventhough I fished as a kid and teen, we only fished creeks and erie canal spots.

I know niagara river has muskies as well as popular spots like lake chataqua but are they any other less popular lakes or areas that hold muskies?? I tried doing some searching but figured what better place to get muskie information than from nut job muskie hunters like myself

I will not have access to a boat unless a family member has one so ill be limited to shore fishing or possibly renting a boat.
Any and all help is appreciated.

There are some guys who charter out of the Buffalo area or you could check out the Niagara Muskie Asoc. and maybe catch a ride. I recently heard from some Canadian guys that have had some action.

Thanks for the information, ill try contacting the muskie clubs and see if i can get lucky. Id like it to be semi low key fishing day because after all I am there for family visiting I wish i would have started chucking muskie lures when i was younger. As i recall up untill i moved to wisconsin i didnt even know what a musky really was and never heard of anyone fishing them. Thanks again!

I went to college out in WNY and Cassadaga Lake and Bear Lake are two small ones out near Chatauqua Lake that from what I understand are a lot less pressured and hold fish. I didn't fish muskies back then but I did encounter a muskie while pan fishing on Cassadaga, never made it to Bear Lake but heard of a few nice ones coming out of it and Cassadaga.

Findlay Lake has some muskies, but they may be tigers. It is a small lake and could be fished in a few hours in the early morning. My brother has in-laws that live in the town of Findlay Lake. He has fished a few times and has had some action. Decent bass and pike in the lake too. Chataqua is a better bet for numbers and size, but it is a big lake.

If you’re interested in renting a boat that comes with a captain, then Larry Jones http://mostlymuskies.com/ is highly recommended.

Your hands are tied without a boat. I'd look for a small river or a place with a fishable spillway. The Allegheny/Kinzua may be a good bet, but that could be a decent drive depending where you're staying. If you're planning on fishing NW Pa a good person to contact would be Red Childress. He'll be happy to give you some advice. He also runs a guide service.

Ill be staying in buffalo, actually north tonowanda. Getting a guide is out of the question, as much as id like to I just cant afford any more trips like that lol. Ive got trips planned for northern WI later this year and that is all the boss will allow lol. Im working on borrowing a boat so who knows, shore fishing will suck but a line wet is a line wet especially on a non fishing related trip

Being north of Buffalo makes most of the places listed out of question for the most part. I wouldn't waste the trip going to Chautauqua without a boat. There's a few spots where you can throw from the bank, but it's like throwing into the ocean. Not sure what it's like around Buffalo, but I would look into going there.

the lower river has places where you can walk the shore and fish. there is a lower density of fish in the lower than the upper but those fish get huge when they feed on those trout and salmon.

Anywhere you can shore fish and cast from the upper you have a chance of connecting with one, ive also heard of people casting in the buffalo harbor and getting them as well although nto as likely as casting from shore on the river itself but they're in there.

After much consideration and chatting with my father, it looks like we may be waiting untill november to go home to visit. I first have to see how NY's muskie season works but my dad said he would go half on a guide. Only problem is my dad is in poor health, meaning throwing baits or even reeling in a fish is out of the question. Anyone know of any one who guides the niagara river?? I dont want to travel far because his mobility is limited. Not like wheel chair bound but definatly not as agile as I am. So any guides with special consideration for those with physical limitations are best. Thanks for all the help already guys.

Larry is a good bet. Trolling is his bread and butter, but I'm sure he'd do a casting trip if desired. I'm sure trolling is the most effective method for that location and time of year, though.

Thanks for the info, Considering my fathers poor health he will just be a ride along for the most part. He is the reason I started fishing in the first place so I wouldnt consider doing anything without him while im out visiting. I think trolling would be fine as my trolling experiance is 0. I will be sure to give him a call and see what he reccomends given my fathers limitations and getting the most out of a day. As crazy as I am about muskies I can not believe I had never even heard of a muskie until I moved to WI. Before then when i thought big fish, i thought salmon or lake trout, those are fine but they are not muskies

Hey man,

What you want to do is get a guide to Jig the river for muskies...Jigging is the easiest way to musky fish. You can do it all day and never get tired. It is much more fun then trolling is in my opinion. I know November on the Niagra is excellent for jigging.

Try contacting the guys at Red October baits and see if they have someone they would recommend. Tubes are the way to go out there and you can really put up some awesome numbers.

I will be out there myself in November for a long weekend of fishing and seeing some friends.

Good luck on your trip. Anytime spent fishing with your dad is time well spent!
