First reports of the season are a bit mixed, but the overall theme was a slow action opener.

Water temps in the 66-68 range were actually down from the previous week as wind, rain and cooler temps created cold front type conditions.

A few fish were seen on rocks on the morning of opener, but Sunday brought a mixed bag of mostly tough reports with a some fish seen here and there.

I was on the water saturday night from 6-10pm and Sunday morning from 7am-3pm with a grand total of 1 confirmed muskie sighting, which hit hard, but didn't get hooked up to the double 10 bucktail. Fished a variety of shoreline rocks, weedy bays, sand/weeds, points, weedy saddles. West and south facing for the most part. Water was stirred up from the winds and may flies were thick where wind was coming in.

On the bright side, most of the weeds looked great!!

Action will get better with stable, warming weather, but there is a chance of showers and t-storms the next two days.

How did everyone else do for LOTW Opener 2012 in the Sabaskong Area.

Thanks, guest. I will do my best. Won't get as much time on the water myself this year while I'm breaking in a new right hand man, but I'll be gathering info and letting people know what I'm being told.

Sounds great, CW. Great water out that way. If you launch from Morson, stop over and say hello on the way in or out sometime. Always good to meetmore M1 folks.

Had some reports of 70-71 degree water in shallow bays this afternoon and fish turned on for a short period. Following spinner baits and a couple strikes, but nothing converted. A couple of regulars reported some slower action over the weekend as well. Looks like some warming and stable weather starting Friday. Next week could jump off big.

Getting a few better reports in terms of fish activity. Multiple fish following for one group this morning. Mostly shoreline rock structure and small crank baits.

Other reports have some fish in shallow bays with muddy bottom and some weed growth.

Water temps coming up slightly with the sunshine and forecasts are for a reasonably stable weather pattern for the next few days. We're experiencing our 2nd day in a row of more stable weather and already the fish activitiy has picked up.

Should be a great weekend on Lake of the Woods.

I heard from some people if you want to catch fish you're not supposed to use steel leaders only florocarbon on lake of the woods. Is that true?

Doug J would be able to better comment on this, but I didn't use flouro til a season ago and I never felt like I was missing out on fish because of it. Only reason I have some flouro on now is because a buddy of mine brought me some from Berkley to try. If he doesnt bring me a few more, I'll be back to 7-strand for everything but jerk baits/gliders.

I'd call that "myth" all the way, particularly in the meso sections of LOTW. Sounds like an excuse for those with poor boat-side technique when they can't convert any fish on the 8.

Oh haha thanks! I don't use fluorocarbon leaders in Minnesota and I still have caught fish.

Bill Sandy puts 400 to 500 fish in the boat each season on the woods and he does not use flourocarbon.

Never mind the wire leader...He "Averages" 3 plus fish a day?

I do like flouro... especially up there because you tend to catch a few fish and the flouro leaders seem to last a few more fish. I switched over because I was tired of straighting wire all the time.

Water temps 70ish most places on 6/27......as high as 74.6....action still slow from most reports..though one boat had a real nice fish hit on the downwind side of a saddle with current blowing through pretty heavy.

others seeing fish in weeds/muddy bottom and shoreline rock related structure.

Hot temps in the forecast with chance of showers/t-storms that could turn the fish on without notice so watch the skies and keep your baits in the water.

First report of a 50" caught this summer was where it should have been and what it shoudl have been on. Sand beach with green cabbage. Pearson Grinder with pink/purple skirt and pink blade about 7pm in the evening a few nights ago. Very next cast after the release of the big fish produced a 41" pike out of the same area the 50" came out from. Still been some mixed reports of rock and weed structure giving up follows. Another nice fish caught be a walleye angler this week as well. A 47" that hit in 16 feet of water on a hump. That figures.

Water temps reported as high as 80 in Burrow Bay after a day scorching sun....mid 70s most other areas with a bit deeper water.

I hope to get out a couple times this weekend after not being on the water for two weeks.

Good luck to all on the water.

June ended with a little more acitivty in terms of fish seen. One group arrived, went out fishing cold without much to go on and promply got 3 smaller fish, lost 3 and saw 3 others. Common theme in their boat was smaller baits. Downsizing! Other angler saw a few fish, but only managed to get 1 or 2 to hit.

Points and weedy shallows were mentioned most often.

Water temps climbing in shallow bays. Please use extra caution when landing fish, removing hooks and removing for photos. Boatside release type shots may be the best way to go in some cases after long fights and/or difficult hook removals.

July is shaping up to pop good and hard. I hope you are on the water when it happens.

See you all in the July thread.
