Usually, when I see muskies swirling and porpoising on the water's surface, I don't expect them to bite very well. I'm just kind of going from past experience here.
Last weekend was different. When we started fishing, we saw several fish that were very active at the surface and then we saw a few being caught and I had a couple of hits and then landed and released a fish.

Are you guys usually glad to see muskie activity at the surface, or do you take it as a sign that they wont be biting all that well?

I guess, if nothing else, surface activity at least lets you know they are in the area...

I have caught muskies plenty of times when you see them surfacing. I always give them a few throws and sometimes you win and sometimes you don't. What can it hurt?

I would rather see muskies chasing bait on the surface than "porpoising" but either way (as ryanjoz) said; I always make a few casts in that direction. It is making a cast that is in the area of a Muskie.....so it certainly seems logical to me.

I usually take it as a bad sign but I did catch a porposer once.

When I see muskies chasing bait on the surface I just about pee my pants with excitement because I know my chances of hooking up with one goes up.
