Thinking about fishing deer lake this weekend and I've never fished it before. With the metro tourney this Saturday I'd just rather stay away. Was wondering if anybody had some tips for fishing it? Types of lures, colors that sort of stuff. Not asking for anyone to give up their honey holes just some tips. I've heard the lake gets pounded with pleasure boaters so I'll probably head out in the evening. Thanks for any input.

Are you speaking about deer lake in Polk co.? If so, this used to be a great action lake with some big fish potential. Since the spearing it has taken a huge dive. I fished it for years and would catch a number of fish on black and orange bucks or cranes but the numbers are not there. I'm sure there are a couple of nice fish left tho. Let us know how you do. Very easy lake to fish!

Weeds around the whole lake. Some points and humps exist too. Use your favorite technique(s) and go fish. I know lots of people who fish this lake, and they all have different styles/favorite lures...... all can be good/bad depending on the day/time of year. It's kinda dirty (for deer lk standards) right now, but still a clear lake.

I used to fish that lake quite a bit. Nickel bladed bucktails do really well with the clear water even on sunny days. Not a cold front lake, but hot, sunny conditions are pretty decent. A few years ago we would average 6 or so follows each time, sometimes as many as 14. Usually a shot at a fish. This last year it just hasn't been the numbers lake it used to be. But compared to average muskie numbers for that size of lake it's still pretty good.

My old stompin' grounds. It's been a few years, but as stated above, its a very easy lake to fish. Weedlines are well defined. Relatively clear water, so its easy to see where to cast. Pick a shoreline and go. Also a little bit of midlake structure, which is readily apparent from the lake map. Agree on the black/orange bucktail...or black/orange anything. Good lake to fish after dark as fish respond well to topwaters, blades and jointed cranks along the deep weed edge.

I've heard that the population has taken a hit due to spearing, which is probably not such a bad thing. Back when I was fishing it throughout the '90's, it was absolutely loaded with 32-38" muskies...one of the highest densities in the state....(which also made it awfully easy to find fish)...it had some bigger ones in it, too, but they seemed to top off in the mid-40"s. The WDNR backed off the stocking rate in the early '00's because the density was just too high. From what I've heard, the lake is kicking out some better fish now, although with the reduced stocking and spearing its not nearly the action lake it used to be. But even so, I'd venture a guess that its probably a much healthier lake overall nowadays.
