Went and picked up fishing licence for me and my wife today and it dawned on me that my daughter who loves to fish will be turning sixteen this year and will need a fishing licence on her birthday. In Minnesota you can buy a yearly licence for $17.00 or a lifetime fishing licence at the following rates
Age 3 and under $227
Age 4 to 15 $300
Age 16 to 50 $383
51 and over $203

I guess I was just wondering how many of you have a lifetime licence or how many of you have bought one for your kids? Simple math says that without a rate increase in licence fees she would be around 33 years old for it to break even.
With inflation no doubt be sooner
So what do you think is it worth it or should say well It will be hers or her future husbands problem to take care of this.

Do it before your state realize they'll lose money on Lifetime Licenses and do away with them like Indiana did.

Of course...then what do you do if you buy her the Lifetime License now....and then a few years down the road, she realizes that she's not all that much interested in fishing anymore. Money wasted? Tough call....

I would do it in a heart beat, if it was offered here in WI. I would have done it back when I was 16 as well...

Well, I wish I had done that when I was 16. But as for doing it now? You are presuming that your daughter will continue to live and fish in MN for the next 17 years. Take into consideration what you could do with that $383 between now and then. At 3%, you'll have $633 in 17 years. That woould buy your daughter a license at the current price for the next 37 years.

I bought my son his lifetime when he was 15, and I will now buy the over 50 one. Best bargain there is for us two even if they don't raise the cost, which has to happen soon. Suicknut, where did you go to "pick one up"? The DNR said I could do it by mail or online but that it may take up to 3 weeks.

My brother and I bought a lifetime deer, fishing and small game license in 1990 when we were Michigan residents. It was only offered by the DNR once and it was $700 for it all. What a savior it's been for us. We both now live in Wisconsin and have been residents for 20+ years. I can't imagine paying the out of state license to go hunt at our camp in the UP or fish all the awesome lakes. All I keep is a card on me that states I am a lifetime license holder and the DNR sends me one deer kill tag before every deer season.

It looks like the only way to do it is to fill out an application and mail or fax it to the DNR and then there is a three wait for processing.

When I read this, my first thought was to get it. However, I have been in human resources for over thirty years and one of the big changes I have seen is the mobility of the work force. Today, people change jobs far more frequently than they did in the 1970s when I started. Some by choice, some out of necessity. Everything I read says the pace of change in this area will only accelerate. So, probably a good chance if she becomes a professional she will move for work.

I think I would still do it, in particular if it is honored by the state even if she moves to another state. Daughters still come home to fish with dad.

When you turn 65 in Ontario a resident is no longer required to purchace a license in effect a lifetime license.

Got mine in Illinois in 2003. I was 35 years old. Actually it was the sportsman's combo (hunt and fish) It cost me 20x's the annual fee (I think mine was $35 X 20 at the time). Illinois had just the one rate of 20X's the annual rate, not an age based schedule. Added incentive to buy sooner than later. My family was far from the fishing and hunting types so it was all up to me. I did become interested when I was 13 or so by reading the articles in the sunday papers here in Chicago. I actually had thoughts of buying a Lifer with my own nickles and dimes when I turned 16 but didnt have the support in perusing the sport(s). I let the idea of a lifer go for a long time. I wish Id have bought earlier than later. Had I bought any sooner, Id have also avoided the annual habit stamp requirement for hunting. The greatest part was actually the lifetime resident privileges. Should I ever move out of state, Id retain resident privileges and would not be subject to non res drawings for deer tags and non-resident tag fees etc. There is also a great sense of pride and commitment you get when you get your own a life time license.

My parents bought me one when I was 15 (I'm 21 now), should pay for itself in the next eleven years and therefore I'll be 'purchasing' a free license after that. And that is barring a increase in the current state fishing license price, which will probably happen. Makes most sense at a young age or when you are not considering moving or fishing in another state primarily anytime soon. Wish they would have gotten me a deer license as well...

If you can buy one it is foolish not to. Especially of they move out of state. They would still have that license and not have to pay out of state prices.

I wish I had one for WI.

I buy one for each of Grandchildren. My boys can buy their own...their fun is costing me a small fortune in lifetime licenses, lures, rods reels etc...Ha Ha Grandchildren do not realize what a great deal it is yet...but someday they will!
