| I Live in Illinois and I have been fishing the Flowage for 4 years. I am a crappie fishermen primarily but I have a love for muskies. however in my 4 years and 20,000 casts I dont even have a follow to show for it! When we muskie fish its in July and I was wondering if anyone has any luck with them on that lake. Any advice would be apperciated! | |||

Posts: 92 Location: chicago | I fish the flambeau flowage at that time of year. I like to target wind driven islands and humps near deep water. I try to fish the areas that were natural lakes. I use fast moving top waters and bucktails that are loud. I also like to always have a bait ready to toss back right after we shut down the motor! Remember to figure 8 a few times cause its tough to see the follows. Bright days equal bright colors ,dark days equal dark colors. Late afternoon is our best times. If your fishing during the day try to satick to the flats right by the natural river bed. Hope this helps.

Posts: 2361 | Guest - 4/15/2012 10:10 PM Hire Ty Sennett. X4 or Dave Dorazio, or John Detloff, all good muskie guides. You may think it's too expensive, but if you have fished up there for 4 years at that time of year, made that many casts, and not seen any fish, you have major education issues.

Posts: 189 Location: West Bend, WI | Pete's and little Pete's are good starts but they see there fair share of pressure. There are a million weed bars all over the chip that hold fish. Look for underwater bars with weeds. Weeds off of islands can be good also. Bucktails suicks and topraiders do well. What side are you fishing? They are very different.

| For whatever reason you won't see many following on the Chip. Hire a guide to at least show you spots to fish and lures/presentations to use. Ty would be my choice. | |||

| I agree I have a learning curve I am just not the type to admit defeat and I hire a guide. however that would probably be the best thing to do. Thanks you guys for the advice! I will more than likely give a guide a call | |||

Posts: 84 Location: Buffalo Grove, IL | I agree I have a learning curve I am just not the type to admit defeat and I hire a guide. I never consider hiring a guide an admittance of defeat. The reason to hire guides is to learn from them what they know about the specific body of water you are on (as well as not having to control the boat yourself.......you just get to fish). And things change from year to year so every time I go up to the Chip I hire Ty for either the first or second day I am up there. He spends hundreds and hundreds of hours fishing that body of water each year and there is no way I can know as much just going up for a week once a year or every other year. After all the hours you have spent trying to get a fish up there the guide might be able to put the final pieces of the puzzle together for you.

| Just keep chuckin baits and it will happen. If you can stay on the crappies you are on the muskies. My kids cast slip bobbers with crappie jigs and I throw muskie baits. We always catch’em both in the same spots at the same time. In July it seems the most important thing to watch is the weather, if there is a front moving in the fish will get active. | |||

Posts: 133 Location: BLOOMINGTON,IL | Illinois where are you from? I started out fishing on the flowage for Musky and it has been a big learning experience. Send me a pm, we could chat. As far as hiring a guide Sennett is who I would hire. I have known Ty for many years. He is always current with what the Fish are doing.

Posts: 29 | Like Meyer said, July is usaully a tough month out there if the weather is warm. If thats the case "unconventional" lures and structure historically for the Flowage produce better. If the water stays cool, fish normal spots and baits, and you will find fish. If you want to shorten the learning curve, I would agree with others with hiring a guide. Pete Rich knows the lake very well and his clients catch some nice fish out there. All the other names mentioned are also very good.

Posts: 691 Location: nationwide | A couple weeks before your trip pm me and I will see if I can give you some areas and what lures have been working. If I am around when you are up maybe we can get out for a few hours. Corey Meyer

Posts: 127 | kind of an old thread, but i've fished the east half of the chippewa flowage in mid July for about 14 years now. with that much water up there, do yourself a favor and hire a guide. having that starting point can be a huge advantage. there's nothing wrong with hiring a guide to show you around and what to look for when fishing that type of water, plus there are a lot of good ones up there (sennett, detloff, etc). my family has seen a fair share of big fish up there, including the 50+ i lost last year, so it's always enough to keep us going back. they're in there, just keep pluggin!
