Subject: Gold Trinidad 14 vs. Silver Trinidad 14?

Disregarding all hype on the Tranx, I'm looking for responses from guys who have used the older gold Trinidad TN14 and the new silver Trinidad 14A. I am aware of the differences in specs... the newer one is slighlty faster and also smaller. But I'm wondering if the performance- ease of use, castability, cranking speed, etc. is "noticeably" different. Is the new one worth getting to replace the old one?

I have used both alot and functionally I think they are similar if you get beyond the size and weight difference. The have the same basic performace stat's. I also use alot of 16 Trinidad's and any 14 is easier (IMHO) to use than a 16 so I may be a little blind to any subtle differnces. The 14 has been my go to reel for 10 blades for 4 years and the 16 for 13's and when I really want t burn 10's... I am sure you can pick up a Gold 14 used and cheap these days...

Thanks. I have the gold 14 and like it a lot. I find it easier than a 16 too. Just wondered if there seemed to be any difference between old and new in actual use. The smaller size is nice but the old 14 wasn't too big anyway. That would matter more on the 16.

I've used the gold 14 for years and really like it. It rocks! I've beat the crP out of it with no issues at all. I actually just bought the new silver model this winter but haven't used it yet so I don't have any comparison during use. The new one is smaller and lighter. It has a longer "arm" on the handle and I like the actual handle grip better- it's more T shaped. It has a slightly narrower spool than the old one, and it's hard to tell but the spool may be slightly bigger in diameter. Not sure if or how that will affect casting- one thing about my gold one(and others I've used) is that it seems to shorten your average casting distance. I'd like to say the new one doesn't do that but I don't know at this point- we'll see.

Turn the handle with your eyes closed and there is very little difference. Re: casting the 20% reduction in spool weight makes it quite a bit more forgiving as far as backlashes. The biggest difference is weight, the reduction is noticed in overall handling over the course of the day.

Two great reels...one a bit more advanced and improved. Don't be afraid of the gold one if that is your price range.

as stated above the new Trinidad spool is lighter by 20% so the new Trinidad reels have no spool brakes, the older gold ones had a 4 post spool brakes and the new Trinidad reels have none. I have used both and they cast the same to me.
