| Hello my fellow Musky nutz! -
I was curious on peoples opinions on what they think is the Best hands down reel for speed baits. Power is needed as well as it is mainly for burning double 10s, 12s and 13s. I do have a budget however... I am trying to spend $200 or less, but am willing to go to $250 if the reel is that good. I would love a tranx or a 400TE, but it is just not possible at this time. I currenlt own a Shimano 400B and a Revo Toro 61 5.4:1. Both can get me going pretty quick, but I want something that is going to FLY!! I will be picking up whatever I choose at either the MN Musky expo or the TB spring sale.
All insight is appreciated

Location: Lake "y" cause lake"x" got over fished | For the price, and if you are on a budget I would say go with the Saltist. Just bought one myself, have had a couple oppurtunities to test it out in my pool. Plus it helps to keep the arms in shape during the offseason. I can't wait to get it on the water.

| In your budget, prolly Saltist will be the best option... If you don't need a levelwind, others to look at would be the Shimano torium 16 or a new one that doesn't get much talk yet is penn fathom 25n. |

Location: Savage, MN | I just ordered up a saltist black gold. Perks are a $180 price tag, good looks, power style handle and 48" return. Cons are heavy, about 20 oz I think. It also doest have a level wind which isnt a huge concern of mine. Oh to add to the perks it does have a centrifugal brake. Havent played with yet but cant wait to.

Location: Oconomowoc, WI | The Saltist LW20 would be the best bet. The 30 is nice as well, but a little bigger. The 40 is way too large. Both the 20 and the 30 have the same line pick up. A lot of reel for what you're spending.

| Thanks for the information looks like the saltist is the most famous at this point. What is the line pick up on the 20 and 30... And I don't need a Level wind but would greatly prefer one.

Location: Lino Lakes, MN | The Saltist are solid reels. They have several pros and cons.
I believe that the pro's outweigh the cons.
Pro's
1) cost
2) horsepower- speed. A steady retrieve with either the 20 or 30 is moving right along. When you need a burst of speed they have that other gear. The ability to really move a dbl 10 if needed is a huge trigger
3) they have the levelwind on the TH 20 and 30.
4) They have great drags- very smooth.
Con's
1) Not built and marketed as a casting reel- they are much more touchy with backlashes and such. The do perform quite well after you get the hang of them
2) they had some early sping issues that have been improved upon with a heavier spring. the springs are easy enough to work on.
3) I had the levelwind gear disintigrate on one reel. But it is a cheap part and easy enough to repair yourself. I now carry extra springs and levelwind gear in case of emergency.
4) weight- they are on the heavy side. The added weight is a great trade off for what this reel can do.
The Saltist have a lever to engage the reel at the end of the cast- Some dont like it but you get the hang of it in a handfull of casts.
The Saltist works best for the larger and harder pulling baits or burning small bucktails. I still have 6) 6500 C's and always have a rod or two rigged up with one when using topwater and smaller baits.
Great buy's can be had on the 20's and 30's right now on this site. You can buy two for the price of a toro revo and 4 for the cost of the new Tranx- that said i will be looking into the Tranx because it is a casting reel first and formost. It has the speed and horespower to do whatever you want it to do.

| Look for a used TE or Trinidad 16n in your price range -- you'll find one for $250 if you're patient. Those are the two best slow/fast reels in your price range. The TE is better all around, but if you want speed you need Trinidad. |
