Hey Jason, The season went all to fast for me this year. I personaly boated and released 18 muskies. My clients boated a total of 47 legals (over 40") and 26 subs. Of those, 28 were over 45" and 5 went over 50, including a 52.5"x 24" beauty. My largest was again under 50", I think I have a curse, 49.5". Starting next season, I'm guiding for Muskie's only, so I will get the chance to fish for them all the time.[:p]

Guideman, Do you guide exclusively on Vermilion or are your musky numbers spread out over other lakes. Someone else I have talked to says the fishery up there is coming on strong. What kind of fishing pressure does it get for musky? Maybe one of these years I can make it up there from Rochester for at least a long weekend. Andy

Hi Andy, I guide only on Lake Vermilion. The fishing pressure is 1/10th of the pressure Lake Milac gets. I can fish most days without ever seeing another muskie angler. The Big V is starting to produce some real slobs and it's going to get even better in the future. Late July into August is the best time to be here, but the fishing is good all season.[:praise:]

Jason This has been an average year for me, while somewhat stuggling here on the CAVE my visits up north has my totals 5 shy of last year, my most productive year to date (171). I still have some good fishing in front of me as long as the weather works to our advantage. Spring here left us flooded, cooler than normal and high waters stayed till June. Northern Wisconsin treated me very good with 43 fish in my boat in June, Canada's Eagle Lake,Indaian and Corner made up for slacking Cave Run numbers. Fishing out of Andy Meyers Lodge on Eagle Lake also showed me plenty of big fish including a gaint that amazed me, those massive fish up there have been the only 50 plus fish I have moved this year with the exception of Presque Isle and Kentuck in the early season. With the exception of the spring gaint I was lucky enough to land during the Cabin Fever Challenge on Green River, big fish has eluded my boat this year. I still have not seen a positive 50" plus on the Cave in 2002. Already looking forward to next year and increasing my numbers as I kick of my guiding in Norteastern Wisconsin from Memorial Day to Labor Day on some great muskie waters. Having those 3 months to add to my normal Cave Run totals should make for an awesome year. Tony Grant www.kymuskie.com

We had a very good year on Leech. One of the best in the last few years. We had action every day with several large fish boated. Seemed to be the year of the buck tail or top water baits. Had very few fish moving on wood this year. The Spring was cold on in this area, but the weed beds were as lush as I have seen them in most areas of the lake. Hope next year is as productive. Did a lot of exploring this year and caught fish in many new areas. Good luck, Murph

Actually since I quit guiding and spent more time with my kids and family. My time on the water was limited to 2-3 days a week. But I fished smarter and did very well in general. I got a 48.25" at an outing and had an 11 fish day in the boat in 2002....nothing to complain about. I got to fish with many many members and that is most important, having fun with friends.

Sure I will do my best!! Weather was calm, 50 degrees and sunny in Early October. Got the fish propwash trolling believers with two friends. It was a fluke!. I tried it again in the same spot and died...twice! Thats musky fishing![:p]

Overall the Niagara River / Buffalo Harbor 2002 Season was one of the slowest. Lake Eries water temprature got near the 80 degree mark, the flow of warmer water down stream thru the river moved most of the baitfish out of the Niagara River into the Lake.We had a few more casting caught & released muskies close to the Lake and in the Harbor for July and August. But the River was very tough even at night, gin clear water to go with the high water temprature just gave the baitfish no where to go but deep into the thick milfoil.Fishing never realy picked up till October, even then it was one cold front after another that kept things on the slow side. Then in November we saw a lot of very high winds,my favorite, winds place baitfish in predictable places, muskies would be close by.My total number of fish caught & released for 2002 by clients and myself was only 82 musky. But I did manage seven fish 50" to 52", six for my clients and even got a 52" X 26" for myself. I spent a good bit of time walleye fishing in mid summer last year, because of the slow musky season.I also spent time on Chautauqua Lake that was very hot for musky fishing last year.Three Chautauqua Lake tournaments in a row last July to August produced 70 + muskies per tournament, close to one fish per entree. 2003 is another year coming ,need very cold weather to stay into March and get Lake Erie iced over,to have better water tempratures to hold baitfish to the eastern end of the Lake and the river.Overall the season was very slow, but showed some Big Ones late.Who knows what will happen with Canadian waters of the Niagara River being open to December 15th next season. Jason, Here in Northern WI,overall I wouldsay my season was average, I beleive on every trip we at least seen a fish or two, with about a 90% catch rate, I will bethe first to say that this year seem to catch alot of "short" fish compared to years past. My personal best was a 49 here in WI. and clients fish up to 46. I took "vaction" in Canada this fall and boated 52.75 forty pounder plus a 48.5 and 46.5. Like I said average year, plus I met a clients that have become friends Brad breuerguideservice.com

My season was not as good as I would have liked. With all the controversy about the big weed kill on my home lake and the hot summer I didn't fish much in the hot summer months. The Spring did bring me my best of the year witch was a 47" and my clients had a good year with most putting fish in the boat. I could say this, no matter if we boated fish or not, we had a good time every time out, and I think that is all that matters.

Jason, I had my best year so far guiding on the Chain. The spring was nothing spectacular as we went from cold right into hot weather. We really never made a slow transition from spring into summer which I believe made the spring bite quite slow. I did have a good July on the Chain and took Auagust off due to the high water temps. The musky bite in late Sept/early October was great with a dozen fish in the boat (biggest one at 41.25") between 10 trips. The November sucker bite was great. I had guests from Holland and Russia that month and both groups lost 3 fish in the 45"-47" range. Even though we didn't get photos of these hawgs, we did get good looks at 'em as all 3 were lost at the boat! Great season, good memories; glad to have been a part of it for these folks. I hope they return next year to battle old esox! I also had a great time fishing with my partner Chris Drury in the PMTT. We took second at Madison with Chris' 41'er on a jig. We made it to the Championship at Shelbyville! Caught 4 fish pre-fishing! Boated a 35'er on Sunday for 16th place. Looking forward to fishing 3 out of 4 PMTT's in 2003. []

Hey Jason, 2002 was by far my best year ever!! Kinkaid was on fire pretty much the whole time I was down here. Ever since they put that spillway barrier up to prevent escapement, my numbers have been climbing. This year was the highest at 255 muskies in the boat over 30 inches. We didn't get as many upper 40's as normal, but lots of mid 40's. My high day was 14 in the boat, and another highlight was an eleven year old and his Dad got a double while casting. It was the kids first time ever muskie fishing! My summer was also incredible. I guided on Leech Lake this summer, and did very well! I had to buy a new boat just for that lake, a Ranger 620, but it was well worth it. Mike Hopkins got the biggest fish by a client and that was a 51, and I also boated a 50, 50.5, and a 51. We saw so many big fish that I can't wait to get back up there next summer. My total for the year including Kinkaid and Minnesota was 338 muskies! It might be hard to top that in 2003, but I guarantee that I will try my butt off to do it!! Chad Cain

Took me a while to answer this one but here goes. I had my best year yet guiding wise as well as numbers. We boated 181 fish and I guided 75 days in our short 5.5 month season. Not bad for a trophy oriented guide, I could just imagine what my totals could be if I was after numbers but then again there would be fewer big fish. I had 2 clients release 2 fish over 50 , Steve last November fullmoon with a 52 x 22 and a 53.5 x 26 and Zach during the August new moon with a 53 x 22 and 50 x 20. I believe I have another 7 or so clients release 50+ inchers. My highlights were catching a skinny 50 incher to win the Muskies Canada opener as well as my first Muskiefirst world wide fishing match. I also caught another 50 incher on a kinda figure 8 this summer as well as having 10 days with 4 or more fish. I can't wait untill next year now that I have an extra month to fish as well as our new and improved 54 inch size limit. []

After reading Chad's post, I am embarrased to say I was actually guiding for muskies. That is an awesome year. I hope someday to catch half that many fish in one year. Talking to Gregg Thomas at that Chicago Show - he also had an amazing year between the Cave and Green River. I think I was fishing for water and weeds - because that's what I mostly caught (LOL)! The birth of our third child took its toll on the number of days on the water this year. I did have a great time though. Met many new friends and spent quality time with old. Made my first trek to Lake of the Woods (Monument Bay Lodge). It was awesome. The biggest fish I caught was 44" but that didn't really matter. The scenery was amazing. The best times were sitting around the camp fire at night talking with friends. I did manage my biggest fish ever with this pig from the Chippewa Flowage. It was truly a fish of a lifetime! I have posted it on plenty of other threads. Sorry, I just can't stop smiling at this beast.
