Posts: 93 Location: WI | I have a 898c for my main locator was looking at getting a new locator for front of the boat. What are the pros and cons of networking vs. just getting a lower end humminbird with an sd card and updating waypionts back and forth as needed? When networked will they both work off the one transducer or will I still need the one on the trolling motor for the front one? Another thing I just thought of what about the map card will that show up on both units or will I have to move it between the two units or get a second card. Thanks!

Posts: 134 Location: Central Wi | Yes this is my take on it also... The only thing you gain by getting the interlink is being able to share waypoints and routes between the two units. I think there is something about installing switches and sharing transducers. I just purchased a couple new units this past weekend. Should be installing over the next couple weeks. Will let you know how it goes... Check out moodeals.com if your looking at anything prices are great...

Getting units that network over the ethernet connection allows you to instantaneously share waypoints, routes, etc. This saves you the huge bother of moving sd cards back and forth everytime you want to update. You can also choose which gps location and which sonar return you want to view on either display. With gps's and transducers far apart on a boat this can matter more than you'd think. The network will not share map-chip information between units so most people get two cards so they can put one in each unit and not be switching all the time. The ethernet connections also allow for future expandability: such as the new 360 degree imaging that's coming out this summer and other options down the road.

Posts: 93 Location: WI | Ok one more question. My 898 has side imaging if I'd get the 788ci HD unit that does not have side imaging will I be able to see side imaging on the 788 because it would be using the transducer from the 898? Or does the 788 unit straight up not support the side imaging no matter what transducer it's linked to.

Posts: 307 | Jw is correct. You will only get traditional sonar on the 788 even though it is linked to the si transducer.
