| I currently have a High Five 19 pitch on a 1996 Ranger 690vs w/150 Merc. I get great hole shot but only 51mph top end at 5500rpm. I am looking for a spare prop and I think a bit higher in pitch, 21 or 23. Where is a good place to look for a used prop? Also, what is the difference between the High Five and Quicksilver 5 blade props? |

Location: Iowa | I'm looking for options right now too. I've got a new to me 1997 690VS with a Merc. 150. Finally got it out on the river today. Full tank of fuel, but not much fishing gear (walleye fishing). High Five 23P, 2 people-up river 46.8 mph, down river 48.3 mph. Just me, while Dad was getting truck, down river-50.7 mph. All about 5400 rpm's. All gps, dream-o-meter reads about 9 mph faster. What hole is your motor mounted in? Not sure what mine is right now. GREAT hole-shot, but feel like I could over rev pretty easily by full trim.

The high 5 props are definitely designed for hole shot and handling, along with holding the boat on plane for slower mid range cruising.
My suggestion: Get out of the 5 blade and into a prop that will have a decent amount of rake, good cup and most definitely steel. Both boats should perform well for all around use, while getting good hole shot and decent top end.
In both cases, I would look for a mercury tempest in a 23 pitch as a starting point. The fins will be a bit larger than what you have on the high 5's, and the prop will also have vent holes that have different plugs for differing sized vent holes to tweak to your preferences. The fins are also well cupped so you get decent hook-up while obtaining higher speeds.
One really nice aspect about these props is you may be able to increase your motor height off the transom more which will do two things: increase speed, and it may help lift more of the boat overall out of the water, without losing a huge amount of handling.
No matter what you do when you start playing with props and height, you are compromising one aspect for another (speed versus handling) and it is up to the owner to decide what is best for his/her preferences.
If you have the option, some dealers have a blue-prop demo program where they will let you try different props to see what works best for your particular boat. Being that you both have the same rig, you may find the same prop works, but you also may find two different props that work best for your particular hull. Each hull will act differently so it is not always cut and dry. Try a few props, take notes and see which prop works best. Then, once you have that decided, start playing with motor height.
As for a good resource for used props: Craigslist and ebay. I have purchased many props off ebay and in most cases, I am out little if any money (basically shipping cost). If the prop doesn't work, you usually can get your money back out of it. Makes for an easy way to try different things without it being too hard on the pocketbook.

| So you recommend the Tempest, I was also recommended to try a Trohy Plus which is a 4 blade prop. What are the difference between the two?

Location: Elk River, Minnesota | The tempest is a 3 blade prop designed for more speed and more bow lift.. Many times these are used on the bass boats designed for speed and can dial in a jack plate for optimum running height of the motor while underway. The trophy is designed for handling and overall lift which if memory serves me on the 690 series of boats, the extra lift for the bow is a good thing due to position of the gas tank. Many walleye boats have gone this route due to the conditions they sometimes run in (which is what we sometimes have to deal with as well getting from one spot to another).
Either way, both props I feel will be much better than the high 5 you have currently. Regardless, if you have the option to test both in different pitches and potential diameters, you will find one will stick out above the other.

Location: Iowa | I stopped by my dealer on the way through last week, and they didn't have any props, close enough to what I was looking for. I got out on the river again Thursday, and after getting my sending unit replaced for my trim gauge, so I could know for sure I was trimmed all the way out, I was able to get 53.2 mph with just me in the boat. That was trimming enough to get 5600 rpms. I did go to full trim quick to see, and it was 6000 rpms. Rest of the load was the same. There are a couple other places I am going to check for borrowing props. My engine is mounted in the 4th hole from top. I can go up 1 more and it would be up all the way. I'll let you know if I get a chance to try out other props.

Location: minocqua, wi. | had a high five on a 175 xri and re-powered my 690 with a 175 pro-xs a couple weeks ago. my dealer tested with the Rev 4 21p based on what i wanted to do and input from people here. i had to wait on it coming in so first dunk in the lake was with the high-five from my previous motor. i didn't run it open and check numbers or anything, but frankly it was a bit disappointing and ran like my old xri ... i wasn't as impressed as i expected to be.
until ...
friday i put on the Rev 4 ... WOW!!! that motor came alive ...
use your high-five as a spare, sell it or put it on the shelf and get a Rev 4 if you want to get out of the hole with a broad flat running range. i may get a custom Tempest 3-blade for fun and top-end, but am really happy that i got the 4-blade prop for this boat. 53.5mph at 5300 rpm's comfortably, up and flat "now"!! broad range and no more proposing from about 32 - top end.

What kind of load when you got those numbers? Have you thought about raising your motor 1 hole? Sounds like where I would like to be with mine. |
