Posts: 253 Location: On the water | I want to start making a few buck tails. I have a vise, vise grips, and round nose pliers. I need to know what size wire I should start with. Something strong that I can bend with the round nose pliers. Any help or suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks, Tom

Posts: 15 | .051 stainless wire is used on most double #10 style baits. You can go all the way up to .063 if you want but that is going to be harder to bend

Posts: 150 Location: Central Minnesota | +1 on the .051 stainless. Buy them in atleast 12'' lengths. That gives you more wire to work with. When I make my loop i like to have about 1 1/2 inches or better on my tag end so I can get a tight wrap and its easier to bend with more teg end.

Posts: 134 Location: Central Wi | Check out the Hagen Wire Tools also if you plan on making more than a couple of them... These can make some nice bends... http://www.hagensfish.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id...

Posts: 615 Location: Michigan | .051" and you don't need any special tools like a vice; you can do it all with pliers.

There are also some really good how-to videos on YouTube. Use .052 stainless and you should be good to go. Good luck, CheapTrix Edited by CheapTrix 2/18/2012 2:11 PM

Yah i agree with that unless your going to buy in huge bulk, otherwise after I buy some components and make a few bucktails there about 10-12 bucks a piece for them, the flashabou and blades is the most spendy

Posts: 4053 Location: Land of the Musky | Moores lures has a lot of your materials too. About anything you need to custom build your bucktails. Dick is a really good guy to work with too. He has done more than most imagine for the musky lure industry and has built "original" lures before they were claimed as "original" lures James http://www.mooreslures.com . Posts: 537 Location: Gilberts IL/Rhinelander WI | I agree $10-$12 is better than $20+. Also agree vice-grips and round nose pliers is all that's needed for wire up to .063.

Posts: 189 Location: West Bend, WI | I bought a bunch of gerry's girls at the swap meet. I paid $16 for them each. Gerry said he makes $1-$2 dollars a lure. His lures are great and he'll make whatever I want. After making my own lures for years I will buy from him. I think it cost me more than $10-12 per bucktail. Metal lure bodies cost more than you think also, especially to ship.

Posts: 134 Location: Central Wi | kodiak - 2/19/2012 8:45 AM How bout the boggs tackle maker Boggs works great for smaller mepps like spinners, Like the No. 5 size or smaller. Otherwise I think you would have a tough time bending the wire on the longer baits... I had one tried a few thing and actually ended up taking it back... Another plus for Moores! He will work with you get the qty you need and you can pick it up at his store if you go through that area at all, saves on the shipping if your already in the area...
