We have about 6 weeks left to the Wisconsin season..[:blackeye:] Wondering how many (percentage or numbers) of your fish have hit/caught on the figure 8 this year.

Last year I had 40%+ of my fish caught by myself or guests on the 8. Last night I was thinking about this and I bet this year it's 10% or less.

I'm not sure if my methods of triggering are getting better or if it's a change in fish behavior but it seems like this year if they follow to the boat they aren't interested in eating....

Curious what others are experiencing

Hey Mark, I bounce back and forth on figure eight fish. Some years it seems like none are interested and others as soon as I make the first turn they are all over it. Last year I only caught about 10% on eights, this year its about 30%, and a big part of those have been on topwater eights (possibly the most exciting part of musky fishing).

I am low this year too....maybe only three or four fish. The conditions you have to fish in...play a big part in the percentage of eights you get.

I think its more related to style of lure you are using. This year I bet 80% of the fish I caught on bucktails were hooked on the figure 8. All other lures = 0% because you can trigger a strike BEFORE reaching boatside. You can't do much with tails until next to the boat.

jlong,

You are right.....since my crankbait and bucktail bite was not so good....that would make sence...[;)]

Hard to catch a fish on a eight with a jerkbait(not impossible of coarse but a little harder) and trolling![]

Good question,

After looking at my logs this year, I have caught about 18% of my fish on figure 8's (or big 0's, fish size dictates that). I would also say another 15% have hit with less than 6 feet of line out, right at the boat. I am fishing on moderately clear water most of the time. The percentages definetly go up when fishing stained canadian water or when a bloom shows up.

2 of the 3 that I got last Sat. were caught on slow moving jerkbaits during the figure 8. [:)]

I am just under 7%. I have only hooked and held 1 figure eight fish so far, which was a week and a half ago. It was also on a bucktail. I had many going in circles this year but that was the only one that really wanted it. I suppose that part of my problem is that my short arms are not very effective throughout the motions with a shorter rod. I should probably get an 8 foot bucktail rod, oh well just another excuse for another rod. []

25% of my fish have been on 8's this year. Although, when I was on Lake of the Woods, between myself and the other guy, at least 50% of them were caught on 8's.

We have had alot of follows this year. I have had more follows on hard baits than my dad who normally throws bucktails. One thing though, I can't get a fish to commit to a figure eight on a hard bait during a follow but my dad get's most of them into an 8 an hit with a bucktail.

Good point Jlong...see that's why you get the big bucks...[;)]

Actually the percentage of typical 8 baits thown in my boat this year is down a little so it makes sense.

I think the funniest one I had was about a month or so ago when the client in the front of my boat had one follow a topraider in and he pulled the bait out of the water and the fish hid under the boat and hit the Violent Strike Spinner the guy in the back was throwing right next to the boat....scared the crap out of him..[] Took me a while to quite laughing so I could net the fish..[:sun:]

We don't get to many on 8s, I think we got 7 or 8 or 5% and thats counting boatside hits on the L.

Right around 10%. I must note that it is a bit scewed, as quite a few of my fish come from a long pause and a variety of boatside twitches with jerks, not really an 8. But just under 10% on actual figure 8's. My most memorable and rewarding catch ever came this year on a figure 8, and no it wasn't my 50 incher. It was the day before that, and I was heading back to camp and I spotted a small weed patch I never noticed before. I took one cast with a Reef Haweg and she raced to the boat nipping at it all the way around the boat. I came back at 10:00 PM and threw my topraider about 10 times where I thought the spot was, nothing. My girlfriend asked "isn't that the rock over there it came from" as it was just about pitch dark. I made a cast over there, and halfway to the boat I thought I could see a shadow, then nothing. First time around on the 8 I saw nothing, second time around I caught a glimpse of tail. Third time around it started chasing it, and halfway around the fourth 8, it dissappeared, and came back from the side and hit the underwater TR. She jumped 4 times in close quarters, and Monica and I both got quite excited due to the suspense. It was the girthiest 46"er I've ever caught. Not the biggest fish ever, but one of the most memorable for both of us.

Wow-nice fish! I bet she was a boatside treat at night. I have only one on the 8 this year, so 6 %.
