Location: Central Wi | Over this past summer I noticed some white spots on the black outer casing of my Humminbird 958c locator after one trip. I didnt think to much of it, I just thought it was some water that had dried on the outer casing. The screen was fine yet and wiped of clean as new. I had tried a couple times to wipe the wipe spots off but they never came off, but still never thought much of it.
Now that I have more time and am cleaning up the boat, I am trying to get the white spots off again and they wont come off. I did some research and it appears it may be stained from overspray from BUG SPRAY or SUN TAN LOTION, and probably wont come clean again.
If anyone else has seen this and knows of a way to fix it let me know, and for everyone else who has expensive locators in your boat be careful.

Location: Leech Lake, Walker MN | Bug spray is a bad deal on all plastics and also do not have any bug spray around any of you lures that stuff gets on hair tinsel and again eats plastic lots of baits are plastic and again it smells no bug spray in the boat use a thermocell or two you won't have a bug problem at night even sun tan lotion on your hands don't touch your baits just more stuff to think about

| Likely the solvent or carrying agent has caused the damage. I doubt their is anything that will really fix that.
A couple things you could do is to use a good plastic polish to lessen the appearance of the spots on the black plastic.
If you plan on avoiding dusty road areas etc... an armor all product will hide them, but can collect dust and make more of a mess.
Be careful what you use on the glass or lense of the locator. I use just water with a little vinegar mixed in. |

| try some Mother's Back to Black. It might work.
I don't allow sprays of any type in my boat. Koepp used Flitz on his X-15 screen when it was all cloudy from bug spray. WOrked pretty good. Not sure if it works on the case. |

| I would thank your lucky stars it either missed the screen or didn't happen to affect it. Buy youself a screen protector to put on. It will also gaurd against those micro scratches that always seem to show up as well. The white spots you have now are only a minor cosmetic issue, your screen is the business end of the unit. |

AWESOME
I heard its the deet & it actually eats the plastic, so cleanig it off isn't gonna work..
I tried alot of stuff. alcohal, vinigar, some sticker remover... sandpaper...
Insect repelant wipes next year..! |

Location: Central Wi | I had heard some bad things about bug spray in the past but never guessed it could do what it has to the locator. Main reason for the post is just to inform anyone who was like me and didnt know the damage that it could do. We always used a Thermacell along with bug spray, and only handfull of times a year... but it only takes once.
I also emailed with Humminbird and they said they didnt think anything would removed the spots because like everything and everyone says it eats away at the plastic. But they would fix it or replace the out case for the standard $260 charge. What a deal. I hope that everyone else can just learn from my mistakes on this one.
From here on out it will only be a Thermacell or two in the boat...

The said, I left my HDS 7 on my boat to and from the landing one day this summer, and when I got home my locator looked like the one pictured above. I don't know what got on it, as there was no bug sparay used in my boat that day at all. It isn't horrible, but it is dissapointing because I almost always take them off before travelling, or at least loosen the RAM and fold them down. Wondering what was in the puddle I drove through. Could it have been a chemical in someones sprinkler system? At a loss. Just a lesson for those who may leave your electronics on your rig, even for short runs. Weird.

That is why my electronics ride in the truck. No rock chips if it is behind the front seat in a Pelican storage case. |

Location: north central wisconsin | mine typically do too as stated(actually waste of time to take them completely off in my case, but need to get them folded face down, and covered). However, out of say a hundred trips to and from the house to the landing last year, I left it in the full upright position on the way home a couple of times. Just enough to get 'something' on it.
