| Hey Raze, What are the water conditions at Piedmont? Any sightings up there lately? |

|
| Hey, John, I'm in Athens County (gateway to West Virginia). Maybe we can hook up sometime. Belpre sure has a nice boat ramp. m[] |

| Hey Chris, as you my well know Piedmont has been tough to say the least. All the old time trollers have all but given up. They say it has never been that bad. I have worked extremely hard for the fish I have taken there this year, and most of the time have the whole lake to myself. There are still a few monsters swimming around, but are far and few between. DNR said the lake had the largest shad in the state. During the "gin bottle" period I had a big girl swim right under the boat with a 16"shad crosswise in her jaws. I spend 99% of the time casting and my favorite traditionally good spots are not producing. I'm hoping for a good post turnover.
BTW, you got any 16" Tuff Shads for sale?
Keep in touch, RAZE |

| RAZE, I think the big-time draw-down that MVCD did on the lake last winter really did stunt the fishing. I stop at the rest area by the dam frequently in my travels, and speak to a number of fishermen. Smallies, 'eyes, all species are not hitting like they used to.
Piedmont is a very pretty lake with miles of uncluttered shoreline. It will come back, we hope with a big BANG. m[] |

| I know the secret to catching those lazy reservior fish. You gotta put that bait between the upper and lower jaws while the're yawning. More exciting than some silly arcade game and more of a challenge too.
Governments rarely do a good a good job at anything, but they hate when we gang up on them.[:praise:] |

| Howdy John,
The Gauley is a small stream by most standards. There is a few holes that can be fished by a boat and I do at time to time. Small boats are a must, I wouldn't put a $20,000.00 fiberglass boat on it for any amount. Got to have a shallow running jon boat and no more than a 10-20 hp short shaft motor and at times you'll still be dragging or poling it over the riffles. It's a good stream to float from 1 point to another downstream.
The Elk is a little larger stream and holds GOOD fish from Sutton down to where it joins the Kanawha River at Charleston. My favorite area it fron the town of Clay upstream to the area around Franetown, lots of nice long streches of water between these 2 towns. Again , I wouldn't put my big boat with it's 150hp motor in this area. Access in limited but the DNR has a book [ get it at your local DNR office ] called " Public Fishing and Boating Stream Access Sites in West Virginia" . It shows 9 different stream access sites for launching small craft in the Elk and I only know of 4 on the Gauley. Wish I could be of more help , hope this helps you out some.
Good luck and Good fishing.
Mauser
P.S. By the way, there is some FINE walleyes on the Elk with fish of 8-10 lbs caught every year and who knows how many in thew 5-8 lb. range. Good fishing for these parts but probably not that great by northern standards. Not bad smallmouth fishing either.[:p] |
