Subject: Best musky reel under $200 ?

Need opinions on the best all around musky reel for under $200. I come north once a year and would like to improve my tackle arsenal.

Thanks

A bunch of great suggestions will follow, but you can darn near buy a good used Calcutta TE for $200 if you're right handed (everyone seems to be selling them to afford a new Tranx...I'm a lefty and would just be happy to find a bunch of low priced TE's in the midst of the craze). The same thing holds true with Toro's. No doubt you can find a Toro in excellent/new condition for $200 or much less.

If you really want to buy new, $200 is a kinda weird cuttoff price in terms of performance. Surely someone will have a good suggestion at that price point, but I'd either spend the $250 for a new Toro (that will last a really long time with just occiasional use and delivers great performance) or drop down to the $100-$120 range where there are a couple of fine options and save the coin.

For once a year fishing I'd look at a 6500 Garcia. Maybe spring for a power handle.

Okuma makes an Isis or a Cedros for around $200.00. I've used both and they're a good reel for everything except the real big stuff.

Otherwise do a little looking on E-bay.

I have at least one of most of what gets mentioned, and am likely to buy the Tranx too, just to see if it's THAT good, but if I could only take one reel with me on the most important trip I will ever take and $200.00 was the absolute limit, I too would go online for a Revo Toro HS, it is just THE musky reel if you can only have one. Personally, I prefer to go to the shops that support musky fishing and pay the extra forty bucks. If everybody shopped online there would be no Rollie and Helens or the similar shops and not having them would really be a tragic thing to miss on a trip Up North just like not having Smokeys would take away a lot of my joy on Pewaukee Lake nearly every week all summer long. I am a big cheap skate in a lot of ways, but I like to support the guys who support my sport. Marty Forman

ABU GARCIA AMBASSADEUR -- RECOERD SERIES RCN 60- 50- or 40, I have all 3 of them and for $ 160.00 you can not find a better reel. The 40's I don't recomend for muskies as they are a little to small , when I go on the road I take all 3 of them with 6 bearings, and a middel gear bearing, and the Carbin Matric Drag they are hard to beat, best reel for under $200.00 , Good fishin to you Marv.

For throwing "real musky lures" - double 10s, big rubber, etc - the Diawa Saltist is your first choice. For lighter stuff I would go with a Shimano Cardiff. It maxes out on 8s, and I wouldn't want to throw any plastics larger than the occasional Mag Dawg, but I like it for throwing lures that don't put a lot of wear on the reel. For the occasional trip a combo of a Saltist and Cardiff would allow you to do a lot at a modest budget.

Daiwa Saltist level wind or Shimano Torium 14 for DCG or Big plastic
The Bass Pro Musky reel for $109.99 retail, comes in a 5.2 or 4.2 gears and U can get a 2 year Warranty, if it breaks they will fix it or replace it for $15.00 more, cant beat that.
