Posts: 18 | New to the sport - really looking forward to this upcoming open water season. Struggling with options for storing various musky baits. Of course I've found the Plano box, Justencase boxes, etc. I don't have a problem spending a couple of hundred bucks for the baits, but for a tackle box?? Other than buying one of the boxes I've mentioned, how do you store your baits. I would think that if a bait had 2 treble hooks and you folded them back and tied with a rubber band that they could be stacked fairly well in a 3" deep clear organizer? Sure you'd have minimum tangles, but could be "undone" much easier than a pile of walleye cranks with small trebles on them. I'm almost certain thats what I'll do with bucktails and other spin baits - mostly asking about large baits with dual large treble hooks. Thanks for the info!!!

Location: Minneapolis | Boxes like the lakewoods are really nice but I didnt have the money to spend on them. I use vinyl downspouts and cut them all to length and throw them in a box. I have enough in the box so they dont tip over and I don't even glue them together. It works great.

Posts: 4053 Location: Land of the Musky | 3 big totes for rubber and its a mess! Then I have about 30 Plano boxes for everything else. Some are the open type and some are the ones with dividers. Real easy to take the lures out in a duffel bag. Just grab and go.

Posts: 1348 Location: Pewaukee, WI | I totally agree with this method! That way you can leave them as is and they're ready to go plus everything can breath and dry out completely from when it was used last.

I prefer a mixture of a hanging box and stowaway boxes of various sizes. I use the 3" version (3700-3, I believe) as you said, as well as the skinny version (3700). These hold tools, leaders, hooks, lures that don't see much action but I don't want to leave at home, lures that won't fit in the hanging box, et cetera. There are a variety of hanging boxes - Flambeau, Plano, and Lakewood. All are good products, but some guys have preferences. I prefer to have my lures hang vertically and in their separate slot; it keeps the paint intact, hooks from getting tangled, and plastics and tinsels from sticking together. Cheaper alternatives are racks made for five-gallon buckets and plastic milk crates made by T's Tackle. Posts: 18 | Appreciate the replies! Looks like the Flambeau maximizer or Plano box might be the most economical "best choice". Also like the cut up downspout idea, but would probably use PVC pipe instead and stand them up in a plastic tote. One thing I do have going for me is the bow storage on my 03 Skeeter is deep and massive. Anyone comes up with the perfect idea, please post!! Thanks

This is brilliant. I keep them in plastic storage containers such as you would buy at any K-Mart or Target store. Within the container this: If the original packaging is usable--like with a Jake--I'll keep them in that. If the packaging has to be torn to get the lure out, or if I bought it used, I put them in a plastic sandwich bag. Works for me.

Posts: 13688 Location: minocqua, wi. | chuk em in a pile and untangle em in the spring. put the top ten in a pile on the floor of the boat tangled in the transducer cord so they won't fly back or out of the boat ... the rest you own and don't need or use go into plano trays and take up valuable space that should be either kept empty or hold other stuff that will keep the floor of the boat less crowded so you're not tripping over useless crap that's in the way.

Posts: 177 | I keep about 500 baits at home nice and dry in lakewood and plano hanginging boxes and I bring about 25 baits in small plano boxes thrown in a boat bag.Found myself bringing way too many baits that are not getting used in the bigger boxes

Posts: 2894 Location: Yahara River Chain | PVC pipe wall is too thick and that weight adds up in a hurry. If you use this in a big tote, you'll need to start lifting weights to be strong enough carry it to the boat. ![]() I use square vinyl downspout in a milk crate for day trips and it works well. Posts: 3876 | I have both the Lakewood and the Plano boxes above. I went back to the Plano because it is about 20% smaller and has a single handle on top so I can move/carry it with one hand. I don't use those stowaways because the baits don't dry out, especially hairbaits. Plus, they take too much time to access, those little boxes require both hands, while the big boxes above can be opened and closed with one hand. You can make some nifty modifications with the drop-in hangers in the boxes above. Like more room for huge hair baits to dry in the box so I don't have to pull them out when I get home. Making your own box is fine but all your baits will get wet in the rain unless you figure out some sort of cover. Last tip - however you choose, when you put a wet bait in a box the moisture begins corroding(dulling) the tips of every freshly sharpened hook in the box. To prevent this, make it a habit to paint every freshly sharpened hook with an perm magic marker. hope that's helpful

Posts: 2894 Location: Yahara River Chain | Ranger says "Making your own box is fine but all your baits will get wet in the rain unless you figure out some sort of cover. " I don't store my baits in that box. i place them on the board (see way up picture). When i know its going to rain, i will use a Plano box with those square tubes in them. But for a day trip it works fine and i place the baits on the board when I get home and if it doesn't rain i don't have to put them away as fast. Edited by muskie! nut 12/16/2011 4:26 PM

Posts: 360 Location: Algonac, MI | Special Mate boxes work great, as do Plano 7910/7915 and Flambeau Maximizers. I made custom boxes 4' L x 2' H x 6" D, to hang two rows of baits, under the gunnels. Each box holds about 120 - 8" lures. Used smoked 1/4" lexan for sliding doors, the boxes are made out of starboard. The lures hang on shelving track, placed horizontal in the boxes. (tracks are normally used vertical for shelves in a closet/pantry) Looks similar to muskie nuts wall board, but it has sliding doors. Edited by Contender 12/16/2011 8:04 PM

Posts: 183 Location: Grand Forks ND | Real disappointed in the new Lakewood boxes. Had an older one with the wood dividers....no problems. The new stuff basically "melts" when in contact with a bulldawg and some water. You're telling me you make an expensive box that cannot be used with one of the most popular musky baits....COME ON MAN!!!!!!

Posts: 699 Location: Hugo, MN | Just Encase is worth every last penny!!! However if you just want an easy, economical way to store get some .32 wire and string it up between a couple of nails in the garage wall. Edited by marine_1 12/19/2011 6:08 PM

Posts: 5874 | The 4 I used last year are in the plano box. The rest of the 300 are hanging up in the basement. Not sure how the 200+ I got rid of are stored by their new owners. Quite a few are stored on the rocks of LOTW, and that #*^@ stump off Beach Park!

Posts: 299 Location: Not where I want to be! | The 6 or 8 that did what they were supposed to do(catch lots of fish), get nice warm comfortable boxes to rest in. The other 200 get hung in a cold dark damp basement (like solitary confinement), so they can think about what they were suposed to do!
