Location: Sycamore, IL | Hey guys and gals,
My buddy and I have been taking an early season trip to So. Illinois in early march for the last few years and are talking about traveling further south to try our luck. We are curious if anyone has fished Tennessee this time of year and is it worth the extra miles? Would Cave Run in Kentucky be a better choice? Do the fish still go through a "spawn" cycle at about 55 degrees and if so what water temps can we expect on average in early March? Also, what guide would you recommend as this will be our first trip down? And finally how's the Bass fishing at this time of year? Sorry for all the questions!

Location: Blaine, MN | Go to Tony's Mountain Muskie Lodge on Cave. The lodge room can be fun in the evenings, and cave run is a blast in the spring. Fishing with Scott out of the MML was a lot of fun last year. we saw a lot of fish in less than ideal conditions. I think the PMTT is usually in April so should be no worries in Mar. with the high water levels in spring we pulled 1 fish from the cover of a picnic table. |

Location: Sycamore, IL | Thanks for the reply short Strike! How far from the lake is Tony Grant's place? The rates seem very reasonable. Is it scenic? Also...still wondering if anyone has fished Tennessee in March? Is it too late? Interested in Melton Hill or the Collins River...Thanks

| Melton Hill can be amazing in March. Just have to watch the weather conditions, a lot of rain can really muddy up the lake. Check out Billy Davis at meltonhillbill.com. Same deal on the Collins. I know a really good guide there, Cory Allen, you can contact him through stonesthrowadventures.com. We have some surprisingly big fish here in Tn. I don't believe there is any natural reproduction in MH, but there is in the Collins. The fish down here run really heavy that time of year. |

Takes about 5 - 10 minutes to get from Tony's, down the hill and to the lake, I believe we launched at the Clay Lick launch and that was the closest. If you get up early enough some people head to the gas station/diner 2 blocks down the road for breakfast, coffee and some fishing conversation. They sell the vehicle passes for the launch sites and the necessary state licenses as well. as far as scenery, cave is Beautiful, nearly zero development on the shorelines aside from boat launches and picnic areas. You feel like your in the middle of nowhere... If your into it bring plenty of libations. It's a dry county so the nearest liquor store is 40 - 50 miles I think we were told. I will try to find some of my pictures from our trip. We saw a lot of fish if 2 days, I of course got blanked as usual but my buddy boated 3, and had hooks into 4 others that just didn't stay pinned. If you go in March and Kentucky plays a great NCAA tournament game have fun, the fans are passionate about their wildcats. |
