| Time on the water is a great book to read about someone NOT catching fish  (dont get me wrong its a fine book, well written)...BUT someone needs to write a new version and document a successful season filled with big fish with the how, why, structure, season progressions..IMO.
My favorite book = Muskies on the Shield

Location: La Crosse, WI | Well it looks like I'm going to be buying Time on the Water for myself. I was looking more for an informative book on presentation, lures, weather patterns, and things of that nature. My dad is a very analytical person who use to fish walleyes exclusively and has read every book about them. Now he's trying to understand my fascination for musky fishing and I'm hoping a good book will help peak his interest! |

Jim Saric and Steve Heiting's Guide to Musky Hunting, I have read it a few times, and find new information I previously missed each time. Hope this helps you find what your looking for. |

Location: 15 miles east of Lake Kinkaid | +1 for Saric and Heiting's book. I read it 3x when I began musky fishing. A great beginner' guide, and I bet after musky fishing for almost 4 full years I could still learn from this book. They place emphasis on a lot of topics that are always overlooked such as the PROPER use of electronics and when to use them, as well as boat control. |

| Muskies on the Shield is hands down the bible of muskie fishing, so much of it applies to any body of water, read it digest it and apply it.

| Time on the Water is very entertaining, and it really puts things in perspective as to how muskie fishing was in WI compared to how it is now. If you're looking for instruction, Saric/Heiting's Complete Guide to Muskie Hunting has plenty of "nuts and bolts" stuff to keep your interest. Ramsell's Compendium is just that - a compendium. If you're into history and records and all of that, it's a lifetime worth of reading. Pearson's "Muskies in the Shield"? Well, if you fish the Shield lakes? Buy it. You'll read it more than once. They are all pretty different from each other in what they offer and what they have that keeps you interested. |

Glad to see I'm not the only one here who's done multiple book reports on musky related books!
Other than TOTW, I seem to remember doing book reports on...
Secrets of a Musky Guide by Tony Rizzo
The Secret Method by Tony Rizzo
Bucktail Fishing for Muskies by Joe Bucher
I tried to do a book report once on a complete issue of Fishing Facts Magazine, but the teacher wouldn't let me.
Agree though that TOTW is the most entertaining. I LOL'd several times while reading it.
Best overall Musky book for learning info though is "Muskies on the Shield" by Dick Pearson.

| This is to say nothing against the author, but "Time On The Water" would not make my list of top ten muskie books. Not enough knowledge conveyed. It is well written, but not substantial. For my money, Dick Pearson's "Muskies On The Shield" is the best, even if you don't fish the Canadian Shield. A lot of knowedge there. Saric and Heiting's book, "Guide To Musky Hunting" is a valuable introduction, especially on the types and uses of lures. For a season by season analysis, Tony Rizzo's "Secrets Of A Muskie Guide" (I) gets a vote. |

Time On the Water while humerous, will not teach you anything.........reminds me of my Cub Fan friends. |

| I very much enjoyed reading the Big Fat Musky book by Eli Singer. Many interesting stories and points of view from many different types of muskie anglers, and guides. |

Love this book! Lots of great stories about Len & his wife traveling, guiding, trapping and always Musky fishing across the US & Canada.

1. Muskies on The Shield - Pearson
2. Crankbait Secrets - Joe Bucher. So much more to be learned in this book than just crankbait fishing.
3. The Complete Guide to Musky Hunting - Heiting & Saric.
Time on the Water didn't really do it for me in any regard.
Len Hartman spins a good yarn, but hard to find (at least up here).

| I thought time on the water shared more about perserverance than any of the other books mentioned. It's not a 'how-to' book like alot of the others mentioned, but more or less one mans' struggle to adapt to the musky lifestyle. Not an instructional book persay, but still makes you a better fisherman if you read it for what it is, one man's documentation of his success/failure. |

Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I ended up ordering The Complete Guide to Muskie Hunting by Jim Saric and Steve Heiting. However, I can guarantee I will be purchasing Muskies on the Shield and Time on the Water very shortly.
I have been reading this book as a "nightstand read" before i go to bed for a while now. It has changed the way I look at situations when I am on the water. I feel like I now have a plan of attack rather than just casting all day. Since I planned on keeping this book, I made tabs of each section of importance to me and then highlightend the important material. I had tabs made for Cold fronts, Blue Bird Skies, Getting fish to Strike boatside, ect. |
