I am going to give making some jerks/glides a shot. I want to get some maple, cedar and mohogany stock.

I live in NJ, but am willing to purchase and have stuff shipped.

Let me know, thanks

You can find a lot online but you might pay more. Best bet is to go to a lumber yard. Many times they will have smaller cuts of wood inside. You can also go to a specialty wood retailers that sells tools and equipment. Many times they will have specialty woods in the back. Best bet IMO is the lumber yard. I have also gotten real nice wood at Lowes and Home Depot too. They usually have cedar, maple, etc in stock and you can buy small pieces too.

I get all my wood at small sawmills. Most of the time they will save the best for me and give me a call when they get hard and soft maple, butternut and white cedar. The bad thing is I have to wait at least a year to use it. Just stop and talk to the sawyer and tell them what you want and they are usually happy to do it for you.

Another place to get wood would be to check with a local cabinet shop. I have a shop and we have all sorts of short cutoff ends 6-10" long in all different species of wood. If you were in MN I would give you a box of scraps. Chris

I buy mine at a small shop that specializes in hardwoods. I absolutely love the place, dozens of different kinds of hardwoods. I have also bought wood at lumber mills, Home Depot, etc. If you calculate the cost of wood it's not much, most of the cost in building a lure comes in the labor.

Just out of curiosity, what do you guys pay for, let say, a 10' by 8" by 1" board of maple?

I have quite a few pieces of 2x2x12 clean Eastern Cedar..."Flute Blanks the guy called them. Also some 2x2x24. Anybody interested? Like to find someone local so I don't have to ship them. Perfect for lures.

I'm still using some exotics for my own use, but I found a supply of heavily figured CA Redwood that is the most beautiful wood that I've seen. I'll have enough extra to sell some this year.....IF the nerve burning works. If that works, I might get a Dilaudid pump and will actually be able to make some lures.
For gliders that I paint, you cant beat 1" thick hard Maple. Easy to work with, easy to weight, and takes primer and paint well.
