I have a 2004 johnson, that has been great, but lately it just starts and dies (unless i keep the idle way up)

Any thoughts? Carb? I have a water seperator and the fuel is good. The fuel filter is 1.5 yrs old. Plugs were new this season.

it is driving me crazy.

Let me know what you would try.

thanks, rob

Does it have a manual choke? If you choke it a little can you get it to idle? Will it run well at mid or high throttle settings?

Many of these small motors have such small idle circuits that it takes very little varnish in the carb from old gas or sitting to clog them up. The bigger circuits used for higher throttle settings are bigger and don't clog as easily which is why I asked if it runs at higher throttle. If that is what it is you can try running some Seafoam through it, but you may well end up having to pull the carb apart and give it a good cleaning.

The other thing may be a leaking or partially stuck needle/seat. It would leak too much gas into the float bowl and flood it.

yes, it has a manual choke, but does not run well fully choked. However, if i put the idle all the way up (or even mid way up) she will run. The problem is, that my idle lever is on the gear shift (remote engine) and in order to put it in gear, i must put the idle all the way down in order to shift into gear. As soon as i do that it dies. If i do it really fast, and throw it in gear she will stay running.

Can i spray some cleaner or something in the intake of the carb to clean or is that a bad idea?

thanks, Rob

Hiya,

Sounds like just a carb adjustment to me... I am betting it is just the slow speed fuel/air mixture screw on the carb. Should be pretty easy to access.

From where you are now with the screw on the carb, turn the screw counter-clockwise about 1/4 turn and try and start the motor. The goal being at this point is to get the motor running. If it stays running, let it warm up, then continue to adjust the screw on the carb.

When adjusting, turn the screw back in a touch, then wait a bit and listen if the motor starts to stutter more or get smoother. If it starts to stutter more, turn the screw back to where you had it, then go a little the other way. It should get smoother. Continue this process until you get a stutter the other way. Once you get that, turn the screw back in until it is smooth again. Now...shut the motor down, set the throttle to starting position and start the motor. idle back and see if it stays running smoothly. If it does, you are ready for the fine tuning at the lake.

At it's smoothest point, take it to the lake (unless you are already there and doing this, which is what I would recommend so the prop is under load while adjusting) and get it warmed up. Gun the throttle to see if it picks up quickly or bogs down a little. If it bogs down a touch, turn the idle screw out 1/4 turn and try again. If it bogs down more, then turn the screw back to beginning position, then turn 1/4 turn in and gun the throttle again. If it doesn't bog down and picks up really quick, then you are all set.

Now comes the big part. Shut the motor down, and restart it. If all is set well, it should start right up and run well without issue.

mine did that. I found my fuel line was cracked not leaking but cracked rubber. I replaced the line. Never a problem again. I think the line was getting air in it.are

Good point!! and simple to test.

If you have a second tank you can borrow or use, see if the motor still chokes out. If it does, then it is motor related. If it doesn't, then I would bet Guest is spot on with something along a fuel line letting air in. Definitely I would say start with the easy one here and follow what Guest is saying before playing with the idle screw...

check the fuel pump on it too, start simple such as fuel water seperator, then pump, then carb. usually it goes in that order and if it is still doing the same thing after you checked all of those you have a bigger problem. My experience is the fuel pump run off a piston and sometime that piston gets lodged in the pump an awkward way and screws everything up.

These problems started shortly after i had the water seperator installed. I think you guys are onto something with air getting in.

thx, Rob

Well guys, i just got the boat back from the marina. I thought i would give all that helped an update. The carb was full of varnish and residue. Everything else was fine, gonna take her out today to make sure.

The culprit, according to the mech is E 10 gas. Although i am religious about putting all the additives and stabilizer in, he recommended pulling the fuel line and running her dry when she will sit for a week or so.
