I love throwing these guys in the fall and work it back with a slow twitching retrieve. The only problem I have with these darn things is they won't figure 8 worth a hoot. Every time I go into an 8 the thing kicks out on me and floats on its side.

I've tried to tune the baits but have had very little luck fixing my problems. Is anyone else having problems with these or am I just Jake impaired?

I have problems with the 8-incher as well. It always seems to ride up out of the water. What did seem to help a little bit for me is to have a large arch into the L and then make a very large circle deep in the water. It still rode up on its side a bit but would dig down again in the straight aways.
good luck

KLY is on the mark with this, good tip.

10"er's are some of my favorites, love to twitch'em. I give'em a really sharp rip then slight pause about 8-10' out in hopes of triggering a following fish. Then I take it deep for the figure 8 and "really keep it moving" to keep the action of the bait going. It will ride high in the corners but that is a good thing...it won't loose it's action if you've got 18-24" of your rod in the water. Only other thing I do is leave about 18-24" of line out when doing 8's with big Jake or deep divers, lets them work easier.

Remember to set back into the fish when it hit's on the 8.

Good Luck,

Mark

That godawful reinforced plastic lip may be great when trolling and banging rocks. For casting, I'd say lose that lip and replace it with a thin piece of aluminum. That baby will slice the water like butter with half the effort. Makes 8's a breeze.

By any chance using a 7' or shorter rod? I have no problems using an 8'rod. it gives you more reach frome the boat and smoother 8s.
