Posts: 209 | Keep in mind these aren't my ultimate favorites, but for the cost you can't beat 'em: Saltist 20LW (hands down) and either an Okuma or Tackle Industries Rod.

Posts: 286 Location: VA | Shimano Torium 16 46" turn 22 lbs. of drag A lot better reel than the Saltist. And is in the same price range. Saltist backlashes way to easy. And the spring on the lever brakes to often.

Posts: 349 | The Torium is a good reel and probably better than the saltist for blades, but don't forget it does not have a levelwind. The saltist levelwind is a much more versatile reel IMO. However I would not choose either of these unless you have experience with a saltwater reel. I think they are much less fun to fish with compared to round or low profile reels. I experimented with a couple different ones last year and ended up going back to round reels. I just dont enjoy having a heavier reel that you have to flip the lever for ever cast and be thinking of backlashing each cast as well. Round and low profile reels are so much more user friendly. I used a Saltist, trinidad, and okuma cortez last season to try things out but in the end I went back to my original blade set up. An okuma red isis with power handle that i got on sale for $45 and pulls big blades all day just fine. The obvious downfall is I cannot get the same speed as with saltwater reels, but it makes an all day fishing affair much more enjoyable. My picks: Get a calcutta, luna, revo, or okuma cedros unless you really feel the need for speed all the time. If you want the speed then look at a saltist, torium, or avet. For rods the TI 9' XH or Okuma 9' 3" XH are very popular less expensive rods. Also look at black river rods. My personal favorite is a Gander Mountain split grip 9' XH that I got on sale for $55. So there you have it, I spent a whopping $100 on a big blade set up that works great for me. Only downfall is I can't get the speed others can but I can litterall cast 10's and 13's all day no problem.

Posts: 531 Location: Hugo, MN | Find a Trinidad 14, the old gold version, on Ebay and put it on an Okuma, Gander Mtn, Black River or Tackle Industries rod. You should be able to pick up that reel for under $300, which is a steal. The new ones are nice, but not worth the extra $100-200. You'll get used to the Trinidad pretty quickly. It's the nicest reel I've ever used. I find myself using it for lots more than bucktails, too. Another reel option is to find a deal on a Calcutta 400TE and pick up a power handle (the one for the Trinidad 14, which is counterbalanced). This option might break the budget when you add in one of the rods everyone has mentioned, but you won't be disappointed. As far as the budget goes, I'd suggest buying the best reel you can get. Save your money until you can afford it. If you buy a lesser reel, you'll likely wear it out and spend the difference on repairs over the first few years. I started out with 6500C3's close to 20 yrs ago. They worked, for a little while. Over the first 12 yrs, I'll bet I bought a new one every year. I now have a pile of salvaged parts, and a total of 3 that work. At $70 each, I probably spent close to $900 on that garbage, not including replacement parts. I would have been better off buying 3 Calcutta TE's. The best thing I ever did was start buying the best available reels. Trinidad, Calcutta TE, Curado, Penn 975 and a Revo Toro. I now have a stable of dependable reels that all serve their purpose.

I would also go with the tackle industries 9' xh telescoping. I currently have a Saltist 20 levelwind. I personally don't like the saltist for throwing DCGs. It has crappy spool tension and I backlash very frequently. But I needed more of an all around set-up and wanted some speed with my reel(and level wind). If your not worried about speed, I would go with the calcutta 400b. The TI 9'xh with calcutta B would put you around $330 and is a great all around combo.
