Subject: GPS Issue

Hi guys-

I was wondering if anyone has/had issues with the accuracy of their GPS as far as the cursor position when traveling on the water? I run a LCX-27/LMS 520 with a 3000 puck & a Navionics chip(its not accurcate with the map on the unit either). IT used to be right on all the time but within the last year I noticed the accuracy is not what it used to be. If I'm in the middle of a channel/close to shore the icon is positioned on the shore & the distance ranges each time sometimes as much as 200-300 feet away. Is this a problem with the government making the GPS less accurate? Could it be that there are not enough satellites locked in(usually most are locked on but there are a couple still available) or is that the 3000 puck outdated & time to purchase the 4000? This has got me wondering now when I punch in an Icon how far I really am away from it when I return? TJ any thoughts?? Thanks in advance for any/all replies.

When going through the channel, is this somewhere where you've been through numerous times or was this on a lake that is new to you? Some maps are off. I've not really heard the symptoms you describe so I'm not completely sure.

The only thing I can think of is maybe the puck is going bad, they don't last forever. However, typically your puck will lose signal, then signal will return and continue to do that, the signal won't lock in if the puck is going bad.

The Lowrance 3000 pucks are well known to have had issues and tend to go bad. A Google search will confirm this and will give you hours of reading material on their numerous issues. The 4000 seem to be much better. I have the same unit you do and recently replaced by puck due to signal issues. To far so good. My guess is that you have a puck problem.

TJ-
These are waters I fish all the time & just started noticing this w/in the last 9 months or so. The weird thing is the distance always seems to be different when its off. If I get closer to the shoreline while in the channel the cursor doesn't necessarily move farther onto the shore. Sometimes its actually on the edge of the land (where it is usually when I'm in the middle of the channel) way up on the shore or sometimes it's even on the water itself which I would say is close to where I'm at. This is the confusing part because it never seems to do the same thing. I have no problem upgrading to the new puck just as long as I'm not wasting my money. If I change to the 4000 they will be compatible with the units I have correct? Its just a matter of switching the puck out? Thanks
