| Anyone try red horse for bait instead of suckers? Suckers are hard to come by. Assuming you can comply with trasport rules, do they work? |

Location: Hayward, WI | Redhorse will work, but they go belly up really fast if you don't have an aerator on them. If they don't get eaten in an hour or two while dragging them around, they usually go belly up. They're a lot weaker than white suckers. I caught a 41 incher on a 17" redhorse on Tuesday.

Agreed. They require lots of oxygen.
Another thing is that certain redhorse species are also either threatened, endangered, or protected fish species in many areas of the country (River Redhorse for example). Be best to know your fish ID. |

| I have caught some walleye and smallmouth using small REDHORSE in the 3-6" range. I catch them in a minnow trap in the rivers and use them for bait on jigs and slip bobbers. they do die rather quickly---I DIDN"T Know that they might be protected---guess i better look into that before I catch and use them again---I did this in a pretty populated area where I have been checked by the Game Warden many times. WOW -- Lucky I guess---but will definately look into that. Never tried any larger redhorse but if legal I might give it a whirl. |
