Posts: 143 Location: La Crosse, WI | Hey Everyone, My dad just surprised me with a trip to Vermilion on Oct. 7th through the 9th. I've never fished the lake and am looking for some general information. Lure type and color, locations (I'm thinking the weeds will be gone), and if there is a place to get suckers. We're staying at Vermilion Dam Lodge and every fish we catch will be released. Any input is much appreciated.

Wow, give the guy a break. Yeah it might be turnover but who knows. I like black baits but I've never fished it that late in the season. There might be a difference from east to west end with water temps and turnover. And I'm posting as a guest so I don't get ripped into for no reason. Probably will anyway though

I have never fished Vermilion (like you wanted here that) but I do fish turnover every year. I like fishing in the day between like 10am-5pm when the sun is the highest and the shallows are warming. I will fish the highest spots on the largest shoreline connected structures. I won't worry about where deep water is or where the bait fish are in this time of transition. I prefer orange/chart multi color bucktails at a moderate pace to cover water, very basic and easy but it works for me. Hope this helps but most of all enjoy your time with dad.

Posts: 4080 Location: Elko - Lake Vermilion | Dude, Look up Marty or Ed at VDL. and they will point you in the right direction. It could very well be during turn over, soooo,.... fish shallow and deep...... Weeds and rocks... throw bucktails,Mag-Pounders Dawgs, big blades and twitch baits ,slower than normal. Enjoy your time with your DAD !! ....That is the most important thing ...... Jerome

Posts: 61 | Absolutely agree with top h20, Marty and Ed Both on top of whats happening there. Personally I like black in a bulldog there. Also don't forget to think outside the norm. That lake gets tons o pressure. Sometimes downsizing when everybody is upsizing is the ticket. Either way have a great time! Good luck...

Posts: 24 Location: St.Cloud | I'll be up there the same weekend grinding away. Never fished it in oct but have in aug. We have good luck with black, blue/black, orange/black, chart/black anything with black in it seem to work for us in the month of aug anyways. Good Luck

Posts: 143 Location: La Crosse, WI | Thanks for the input guys, I'll let you know if we catch anything! Yeah, My Dad talked to Ed and he said that the lake doesn't have a typical turnover. Also, the lake acts as many smaller lakes inter-connected so you can usually find somewhere that is hot. But as all of us know with musky fishing, it can be tough anytime of the year.

Posts: 829 Location: Maple Grove, MN | I'd head straight to the big rock bars in the middle of the lake. Rocks, rocks and more rocks in the 1 to 10 ft range. That is where I would start. The lures the other guys mentioned should all work great. I'd also add a couple of chartruese/black spinner baits of some type to your arsenal. Just smack those spinner baits off the boulders and hold on.
