I've owned nothing but 4 strokes for the past 6 years and have always bought good outboard 4 stroke motor oil. The price continues to go up and up and my question for those in the know, is it really necessary, or will regular motor oil do just fine?

I dont think so because outboards run at higher RPMs then autos..

I would be interested in hearing other replies though, because i too am tired
of paying so much for the oil!

My 2001 Yamaha 4 stroke manual says to run 10W-30 or 10W-40.

It doesn't say anything about the special "marine" 4 stroke oil which is much more expensive.

That being said, I had always just used 10W-30 synthetic oil like Quaker State or whatever was cheapest.

I kept hearing about the special "marine" specs for 4 stroke oil so I did spluge this year and bought the marine sythenic brand from Fleet Farm for like 4 bucks a quart.

My understanding is whatever the marine oil specs have compared to regular oil is something that prevents rust. And I read that rust is more of an issue with motors used in saltwater than fresh water.

My 2002 Suzi calls for "premium 10W-40 oil" so I run Royal Purple 10W-40. My mechanic said it's probably better than the Suzuki oil anyway. It's 5$ a quart, so either way it isn't cheap, but I only run about 100 hours a season anyway, so 25$ for oil doesn't bother me too much.

Are you really complaining about $25 in oil in a season? Try $40+ for DFI oil PER GALLON. I don't run that much and can burn 4 Gallons per season easy. I know others that more than double what I burn every season.

If you are paying $40 per gallon for DFI oil, I would suggest you check out Amsoil HP injector oil.. Good for DFI engines, is synthetic and will be about $10 less or more per gallon. Many Napa auto stores carry it in the Twin cities area and that might be the case around the country now.

There's no way I'm going to try to save $6/gallon to go with something that Mercury will later tell me is the reason my motor is not running correctly.

I started running Amzoil in my F225 and it's been great so far. Also put it in my truck and it's been very good - When you use their filiter in the vehicle with the oil, they gaurantee the oil change for 15,000 miles.

It's worth checking out.

Amzoil is pricey, but talk to your local distributor about their best price. I didn't pay $10 per QT.
