Made up a few baits had them out today fishing. Had one of the baits out running down about 20 foot it was running great for about 45 mins then all of a sudden it hit the surface. Reeled it in and it looked like a puffer fish. All the paint ballooned off the wood. Never seen anything like it. All the other baits were fine and I used the same process. Killz, createx paint, and then 4 layers of etex. Can anyone help me out or is this just a freak thing?

Somehow water got in.....around the screw eyes maybe? Hard to say, once the water gets in then the wood expands and you get a "puffer fish lure".

Sorry to hear that

Sounds like water penetration caused the wood to swell up and your paint and clear coat to peel off. I've had it happen a few times and it was from a spot that didn't get epoxied fully (around the eye ridge). Water got in under the epoxy and only a few casts and it was a goner.

Good luck
